Seattle Seahawks Rashaad Penny Out Three-Four Weeks with Hand Injury

Training camp injuries are always unfortunate, and the injury bug bit a prominent member of the Seattle Seahawks. Rookie first-round running back Rashaad Penny suffered a hand injury, including a broken finger, during one of Seattle’s training camp sessions. The Seattle Times’ Bob Condotta first broke the news.

Penny reportedly flew to Philadelphia on Tuesday to have surgery for his injured hand. While the injury is obviously bad news, the rookie could return for the start of the regular season. However, he’s almost certain to miss the remainder of the pre-season.

Penny was drafted 27th overall by Seattle in the 2018 NFL Draft. Drafted to serve as Marshawn Lynch‘s successor, Penny was penciled in to have a big role in this offense. Penny saw the ball eight times in his preseason debut, running all eight times for a grand total of 16 yards. Seattle lost their preseason opener, 19-17, to the Indianapolis Colts.

During his time at San Diego State, Penny ran for a combined 3,656 yards and 38 touchdowns. This includes a phenomenal senior season in which Penny accounted for 2,248 rushing yards and 19 rushing touchdowns. Penny was the force behind San Diego’s offense in 2017, carrying the ball 289 times.

In Penny’s absence, the Seahawks are expected to turn to second-year running back Chris Carson. Carson ran for 208 yards without a touchdown on 49 carries his rookie season, and added 59 yards and a touchdown on seven receptions.

Mike Davis, Seattle’s leading rusher in 2017, should also see an uptick in work. Davis is currently third on Seattle’s official depth chart after rush1ing for 240 yards last year. The fourth-year running back also accounted for 131 yards on 15 receptions.
