NFL Rumors: Analyst Predicts Blockbuster Top-5 Pick Trade During Training Camp

To no one’s surprise, the latest NFL rumors project the Indianapolis Colts are likely to trade QB Anthony Richardson during training camp later this month. Earlier this offseason, the former first-round pick requested a trade, but the Colts failed to find a trade partner. Richardson hasn’t generated much interest, which isn’t surprising given how young he is and that he hasn’t done enough to prove he’s worthy of an investment. Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report laid out plans for the QB, with Daniel Jones set to open up starting team drills during camp.

The Colts are hoping to move the 2023 draft selection at some point. Richardson will be a free agent after the 2026 season, but the team might not want to wait that long. Between Riley Leonard and Easton Stick, unfortunately, Indianapolis is better off sticking with these backups to supplement Jones this upcoming season. Meanwhile, the top pick has struggled ever since he joined the Colts in 2023.

During the 2024 season, there was one point where the QB “voluntarily” took himself out of a game due to needing a “breather.” It was probably one of the oddest things to see unfold from the pocket-passer, so it’s no surprise that teams aren’t interested.

NFL Rumors: Analyst Predicts Blockbuster Top-5 Pick Trade During Training Camp

What Does the Future Hold?

The former first-rounder is no longer fighting for a roster spot. Instead, he will have an opportunity to prove to 31 other teams that he’s still a solid pocket-passer. Although he won’t get starting reps, the QB could have his moments during training camp where teams could keep an eye on how he develops.

At the same time, it might be too late. The best route is likely a release before Week 1, but let’s explore three teams that are willing to give Richardson one last chance.

Possible Next Teams

Arizona Cardinals

Earlier this offseason, Jacoby Brissett sat out seeking a new deal, but could ultimately be moved after training camp. The Arizona Cardinals took QB Carson Beck in the first round of this year’s draft, who’s likely to be named the Week 1 starter. If Brissett winds up sitting out once again, the Cardinals could trade him, and the Colts could swap QB’s in a blockbuster proposal.

Richardson would get a fresh start and battle for the backup job against Gardner Minshew, while Brissett returns to Indianapolis to assist Jones.

Carolina Panthers

Meanwhile, the Carolina Panthers have refrained from a long-term commitment to QB Bryce Young. Although they picked up his fifth-year option, the team is waiting to see how this season pans out. If the team brings in another QB, then of course, that would be bad news for Young. However, it wouldn’t be the first time that Head Coach Dave Canales would look at other options.

There was a point where he benched Young in favor of veteran Andy Dalton. This was when the Panthers weren’t fully equipped offensively like they are now. After signing Kenny Pickett as the new backup, if Young can’t prove, even with the talent he has, it’s time for the Panthers to move on. This could allow Pickett and Richardson to battle for the starting role.

Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings signed top free agent Kyler Murray this offseason after seeing that JJ McCarthy hasn’t proven he is the answer yet. It would not be surprising to see the loser of this QB battle be traded. Despite bringing back Carson Wentz on another one-year deal, they could roll the dice on Richardson to establish himself as a reliable backup once Wentz is gone.
