Seahawks QB Sam Darnold Reveals When He Knew Minnesota Was Moving On

Before finding a long-term home in Seattle, current Seahawks QB Sam Darnold spent one memorable season with the Minnesota Vikings, leading the franchise to a 14-win campaign while reviving his NFL career. Regardless of that success, they did ultimately move on during free agency. Darnold has now spoken about his desire to stay in Minnesota and why he came to grips with why the team felt it was best to move in another direction.

Seahawks QB Discusses Desire to Stay with Minnesota Vikings

Bussin With the Boys host Taylor Lewan prompted Darnold to answer if he had the expectation of playing it out in Minnesota, given last season’s success, and whether feeling exposed in free agency was a concern after the way the season ended. The Seahawks’ QB readily confirmed it was and then detailed what logic behind the decision would entail.

“Yeah, I think for me, wow, like Minnesota was amazing. That’s a great question, by the way. Hard-hitting question. But for me, I think having success in a place and getting to know the guys in the locker room, right? Of course. Of course, you want to make that work. But shortly into negotiations, it was like, ‘All right, this isn’t going to be the spot.’ You know what I mean?”

We do not often hear about how rapid those negotiations happened or how quickly it was that the negotiations faltered behind the scenes. But the Seahawks QB made it clear that he wanted to stay in Minnesota, especially after the 14-win season he had in 2024. However, he also admits that it did not take him too long to understand the direction Minnesota’s long-term approach was leading in. He was not upset, and he did not drag anything out; he simply admitted he wanted to stay and understood that the Vikings had another direction in mind.

Seahawks QB Admits That He Knew Early on Time in Minnesota Was Coming to an End

When Darnold acknowledged that he knew early in negotiations a return to Minnesota was unlikely, Lewan followed up by asking how he reached that conclusion, suggesting it may have been because the Vikings offered only a short-term, one-year deal. Darnold did not reveal the financial details, but he confirmed Lewan’s assumption before explaining why he harbored no ill will toward the organization.

“Yeah. Yeah. That’s exactly right. And for me, too, I’m not one of those guys where I’m spiteful. I get where the GM was coming from. I totally do. You see it with a lot of teams. You saw it with San Francisco. You saw it with Houston for a little bit with C.J. These rookie quarterbacks on their rookie deals—you try to strike while you have a rookie quarterback so you can pay other guys around him and make the team really good. I get that part of it. And I get drafting a guy in the first round and having a belief that he’s the guy.”

Darnold’s comments reveal that the outcome of negotiations may have been decided much earlier than many realized. By agreeing with Lewan’s suggestion that a short-term offer signaled the Vikings’ intentions, he acknowledged he quickly understood where the organization stood. Once Minnesota made it clear it was not prepared to make a long-term commitment, the Seahawks QB shifted from trying to return to preparing for the next opportunity.

What also stands out is that Darnold never questioned the Vikings’ reasoning. He understood that teams with talented quarterbacks on rookie contracts often use that financial flexibility to strengthen the rest of the roster. With J.J. McCarthy waiting in the wings, the Seahawks’ QB recognized Minnesota was sticking to the plan it established the day it drafted him. Rather than letting the negotiations become contentious, both sides accepted the situation and moved forward.

Seahawks QB Ended Up in the Right Spot

In the end, the split appears to have worked out for everyone involved. The Vikings moved forward with the quarterback they drafted to be their future, while Darnold landed in Seattle with another opportunity to lead a franchise. Looking back now, it is hard to argue that either side made the wrong decision. The Seahawks QB may have known early that his time in Minnesota was ending, but his career ultimately landed exactly where it needed to.
