5 Must-Win Games for the Carolina Panthers in 2026

The Carolina Panthers must-win games in 2026 could decide whether Bryce Young and Carolina return to the playoffs.

5 Must-Win Games for the Carolina Panthers in 2026

When the schedules are released, everybody circles games. Players have talked about it before. Where some games feel like uphill battles, some feel like swing games. And some are games you have to win if you expect to make the playoffs.

Carolina’s schedule this year is tough. According to Vegas, they have the 3rd-toughest schedule. That comes with making the playoffs and drawing both the AFC North and NFC North. There are playoff teams everywhere on this schedule, and not many weeks where Carolina can afford to overlook anybody.

Before getting into the list, there are no divisional games here. Everybody already knows those matters. The Tampa Bay, Atlanta, and New Orleans games are always going to decide playoff positioning in the NFC South.

These are the non-divisional games that feel the most important for Carolina this season.

The Panthers surprised a lot of people last year, making the playoffs at 8-9 despite not being favored often. This season feels similar. Carolina still has a lot to prove nationally, but this roster is more talented than people give it credit for.

Carolina Panthers Must-Win Games vs. Cleveland Browns: September 27, Week 3

This is the biggest must-win game on the schedule because good teams stop messing around and win games like this.

By Week 3, Cleveland’s quarterback situation could still be unsettled. Whether it’s Deshaun Watson or Shedeur Sanders, there’s a chance the offense is still trying to find consistency early in the year.

That’s why Carolina has to take care of business on the Road.

The Panthers don’t have the luxury of dropping games they’re expected to win, especially with how difficult the rest of the schedule is. If Carolina wants to get back to the playoffs, this is one of those games that simply has to go in the win column.

Lose this game, and the margin for error gets very small very quickly.

Carolina Panthers Must-Win Games vs. Chicago Bears: September 13, Week 1

Every Panthers fan already understands why this game matters.

The Bryce Young trade story will always be connected to the Chicago Bears. Carolina traded up for Young, struggled the following year, and Chicago eventually landed Caleb Williams.

Now, both quarterbacks are tied together, whether fans like it or not.

Williams deserves the attention he’s getting, but Young has improved a lot since being benched early in 2024. He looks more comfortable in the offense, more confident pushing the ball downfield, and Carolina finally has stability around him.

There’s also real emotion tied to this matchup.

Carolina believed Young was their franchise quarterback when they made that trade. Opening the season by beating Chicago would mean a lot to the organization and the fanbase. It also matters for conference positioning early in the season. NFC wins always become important later in the year when playoff tiebreakers start showing up.

If Young outplays Williams in this game, the national conversation around him changes immediately.

Carolina Panthers Must-Win Games vs. Minnesota Vikings: December 6, Week 14

This game feels important because of where it lands on the schedule.

By December, every NFC game starts carrying extra playoff weight. Tiebreakers matter. Seeding matters. One loss can completely change where you land in the standings.

This matchup is also a huge test for Bryce Young.

Brian Flores has one of the best blitz-heavy defenses in football. Minnesota constantly pressures quarterbacks and forces offenses to stay disciplined. The positive for Carolina is that Bryce has actually looked very good against the blitz over the last year. He’s shown he can stay calm, process quickly, and attack pressure looks when defenses get aggressive.

That makes this game really interesting.

If Carolina protects well up front and Bryce handles pressure the way he did late last season, this feels like the type of game Carolina can steal late in the year.

Carolina Panthers Must-Win Games vs. Cincinnati Bengals: December 20, Week 15

This is probably the best offense Carolina will face all season.

Cincinnati Bengals still have one of the most dangerous passing attacks in football, and Carolina’s corners are going to be isolated a lot in this game. That becomes dangerous against a quarterback like Joe Burrow.

This is also a massive year for Cincinnati.

The Bengals have missed the playoffs the last two seasons, and missing again would be completely unacceptable with the talent they have offensively. That urgency is part of what makes this matchup important.

By Week 15, Carolina’s secondary should have much better chemistry and experience together. This is the type of game where you really find out if the defense is ready to hold up against playoff-level offenses.

If Carolina’s pass rush gets going consistently, they’ll have chances to make life difficult for Burrow. But the secondary is going to have to survive on the outside.

Carolina Panthers Must-Win Games vs. Denver Broncos: Week 9

This might be the hardest game on the entire schedule.

The Denver Broncos, had one of the best defenses in football last season, and this feels like a major measuring stick game for Young and the offensive line.

Denver’s edge pressure against Carolina’s tackles is probably the matchup that decides the game.

During this Week 9 matchup, Monroe Freeling, Rasheed Walker, and Taylor Moton will rotate through important snaps against a defense that finished near the top of the league in sacks and pressures. It’s a perfect test for this offensive line group to grow and show what they can become.

Then there’s Patrick Surtain II, who is probably the best cornerback in football right now.

This game is really about proving Young can function against elite defenses. Even if Carolina loses, people are going to pay attention to how Bryce handles pressure, how quickly he processes, and whether the offense can still operate against one of the league’s best defenses.

The Last Word on Carolina Panthers Must-Win Games

Carolina doesn’t have much margin for error with this schedule. But these are the Carolina Panthers must-win games in 2026. They will define whether this team is truly ready to compete in the NFC playoff race. Some of these are games the Panthers should win. While others are games that tell you whether Carolina is actually ready to compete with playoff teams consistently.

With Bryce Young continuing to develop and the roster improving around him, Carolina has the talent to surprise people again. But against one of the NFL’s toughest schedules, these swing games could ultimately decide the Panthers’ postseason future.
