Steelers Rumors: Former 3-Year Bust Facing Possible Massive Trade; Camp Roster Crunch Intensifies

The Latest Pittsburgh Steelers rumors follow an underutilized offensive weapon as the team could look to move him before the 2026 season. According to a source, WR Roman Wilson is on a “roster crunch,” and there’s a chance that the Steelers could trade him if he doesn’t show improvement. NFL Training Camp isn’t until next month, but that might be the receiver’s last chance to prove that he’s a dependable pass-catcher. With Aaron Rodgers returning for his last season, it would be surprising to see the team sign a low-stakes free agent veteran instead.

Selected in the 2024 NFL Draft, the former Michigan product has yet to record more than 500 receiving yards in one season. After the team traded for Michael Pittman Jr. to help veteran DK Metcalf in the aerial attack, it would make sense to add another veteran. Rodgers is looking to add one more championship to his resume, especially reuniting with new Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy. This means a rebuild will need to happen in 2027, and that’s when Wilson will be entering the final season in his current rookie deal.

Steelers Rumors: 3-Year Bust May Face Massive Trade

A Market for Roman Wilson?

Unfortunately, there isn’t much to trade for to get someone like Wilson. NFL teams would probably prefer to sign high-stakes veteran receivers, including Deebo Samuel, Keenan Allen, DeAndre Hopkins and Stefon Diggs. However, it’s possible that the Steelers could find some type of return if they make the young wideout available on the trade block.

The former third-round pick has the agility, versatility and hands to become a true playmaker in the slot. After the team selected Germie Bernard in the second round, is there really room for the third-year receiver anymore? Probably not. The fact that the team traded up to get Bernard could mean that the Steelers are actively trying to move on, so here are three teams that could give the Michigan product a fresh start.

Top Next Fits

Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts are actively searching for a wide receiver and could consider Wilson. Earlier this offseason, the team gave Alec Pierce a monster deal, but he’s slowly recovering from surgery. This leaves Josh Downs and Ashton Dulin, who hasn’t gotten any starting snaps in the NFL. While Downs, of course, is holding this wideout group like glue, the Colts can’t afford to walk into the 2026 season without at least a veteran pass-catcher.

If they want to give up a late seventh-round pick, they could load up their offense to help Daniel Jones’ passing game and acquire the Steelers hidden asset, who could turn out as an underrated offensive weapon.

Los Angeles Chargers

Meanwhile, the Chargers haven’t entertained bringing back Keenan Allen, but the door isn’t fully closed. They drafted Brenen Thompson to continue their WR build behind Tre Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith. However, they have veteran QB Justin Herbert, who’s ready to be elevated to the next level. He’s a solid pocket-passer, but that will be up to how head coach Jim Harbaugh can best support him.

They can talk about running the football all they want, but the team can’t waltz into the season without adding another pass-catcher. Wilson won’t do much, but at least they’d have a receiver who has similar characteristics to Ladd McConkey.

Los Angeles Rams

After coming close to acquiring AJ Brown, it’s safe to assume the Los Angeles Rams are at least considering adding a veteran playmaker. Davante Adams is entering what could be his final season in the NFL. This means that the team must better surround Puka Nacua with more than one receiver, who is at least young in his career. While they’re hoping Jordan Whittington and Konata Mumpfield to establish themselves in this offensive unit, they could afford to squeeze Wilson into this core group.
