Jonnu Smith Steelers Trade

REPORT: Steelers Desperately Trying to Trade For Dolphins Pro Bowler

Tight end Jonnu Smith was the lone Dolphin to make the Pro Bowl last year, and the Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly trying to acquire him. Signed to a modest contract following an unremarkable stint with the Atlanta Falcons, Smith thrived in Miami despite a change in scheme and a rotating door at the quarterback position. When all was said and done, the tight end finished the season with 88 receptions for 884 yards and eight touchdowns.

Despite the strong play, his first season in Miami could be his last. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the tight end wants a new contract, and the cash-strapped Dolphins may not be able to give it to him. Rather than re-negotiate, the Dolphins are engaged with the Pittsburgh Steelers for a potential Jonnu Smith trade. Smith, of course, spent a sizable portion of his career with current Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and could provide some stability at the position.

REPORT: Steelers, Dolphins Working Out Jonnu Smith Trade

While Jonnu Smith had his best season without him, most of the tight end’s professional success came under the watch of Arthur Smith. Arthur was the Titans tight end coach from 2016 to 2018 and earned a promotion to offensive coordinator for the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Both Smith’s left the Titans following the 2020 campaign – Jonnu joined the Patriots on a massive deal, while Arthur became the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.

After two disappointing seasons in New England, where he struggled to make a name for himself, Jonnu Smith joined the Falcons for the 2023 season. Hoping to re-establish his value, the tight end finished the campaign with 50 receptions for 582 yards and three touchdowns. Now, Jonnu and Arthur Smith could reunite in Pittsburgh, where he could become the team’s second target behind D.K. Metcalf.
