The Kansas City Chiefs spent the offseason attempting to fix the flaws that led to their blowout Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. While it’s impossible to create a perfect roster with no weaknesses, the Chiefs still have one of the league’s better all-around rosters, and PFF thinks the team did an adequate job heading into 2025. In a recent article, Trevor Sikkema gave the team a ‘B’ for their offseason efforts, highlighting the moves on the offensive line, for better and worse.
“Trading Joe Thuney (80.0 PFF grade) was not ideal, but the Chiefs will hope Kingsley Suamataia (37.9 PFF grade) can fill in at guard better than he did at tackle,” Sikkema writes. “…the receiver room could be better, but getting Rashee Rice back will help.”
PFF: Chiefs Earn A ‘B’ For Offseason Moves
If the Chiefs didn’t use their first-round pick on Ohio State’s Josh Simmons, Kansas City would probably have a lower offseason grade. The team endured the entire 2024 season without a proper left tackle and forced Joe Thuney to play out of position down the stretch. While the team spent big on Jaylon Moore, they overpaid for his services. Simmons offers some long-term stability at the position, but they never found a true replacement for Thuney at left guard. Perhaps second-round pick Kingsley Suamatia can take a Year 2 leap, but he an active liability at tackle as a rookie.
Additionally, Kansas City should have done more to address the offensive weaponry. First-round pick Xavier Worthy showed promise, and Rashee Rice will be a welcome addition to the passing attack, but this team needs another set of hands. Travis Kelce slowed down last year, and the future Hall of Famer isn’t getting any younger. Patrick Mahomes is great, but it’s hard to win a championship with questions on the offensive line and uncertainty at the skill positions.
Of course, this isn’t to say the Chiefs didn’t make any good moves during the offseason. Retaining a young core is the best way to ensure sustained success, and the organization extended guard Trey Smith and Nick Bolton. Ultimately, this team should remain on the short list of Super Bowl contenders as long as Mahomes stays healthy.
