Veteran free agent cornerback Steven Nelson has signed a new contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. Nelson, a former third-round pick, spent his early years with the Kansas City Chiefs but has also played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Houston Texans.

Even though he spent most of the season unsigned, Nelson had a strong 2023. Appearing in all 17 games for the Texans, the wide receiver finished the season with four interceptions, 12 passes defended, 63 tackles, and a solid 72.4 PFF grade while helping the Houston Texans win the AFC South and go on an unlikely playoff run. A free agent after the season, Nelson announced his retirement and didn’t show any signs of returning prior to his workout with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Nelson originally entered the league as a third-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. Selected by the Chiefs, the Oregon State product began his career as a backup before earning a starting job in 2016. While he never won a title with the Chiefs, the cornerback helped the team make the playoffs in all four seasons of his rookie deal while making it to the AFC Championship Game in the first year of the Patrick Mahomes Era.

Following the expiration of his rookie contract, Steven Nelson signed a three-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played out two of those seasons before requesting his release and signing a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. Following his short stint in the City of Brotherly Love, the cornerback re-established his value in his two strong seasons with the Houston Texans.

Since signing his rookie contract with the Chiefs, Steven Nelson has appeared in 130 games while making 115 starts. While on the field, the cornerback has recorded 13 interceptions, 78 passes defended, one sack, 456 tackles, 11 tackles-for-loss, and two quarterback hits.
