WATCH: Chiefs Carson Steele Makes Roster Case With Incredible Touchdown Run

Chiefs running back Carson Steele continued to make his case for the roster with an impressive touchdown run during the preseason finale
Carson Steele Touchdown

The Chiefs backup running back position is up for grabs, and his touchdown in the preseason finale might be enough to give Carson Steele the job. An undrafted free agent and fullback by trade, Steele has impressed throughout camp with his hard-nosed, physical style of play. He already started receiving reps with the first-team offense, and his remarkable run should ensure that he makes the Week 1 roster, if nothing else. During the 34-21 loss to the Chicago Bears, Steele ripped off a 32-yard touchdown run, knocking over several would-be tacklers in the process.

While the touchdown was his biggest run of the night, it wasn’t the only good play from Carson Steele. In total, the running back finished the contest with four carries for 50 yards and a score.

As is always the case with preseason action, this performance should be taken with a grain of salt. Carson Steele has played remarkably well over the past few weeks, but this touchdown doesn’t mean he’ll be the next Barry Sanders. However, it does suggest he has a decent shot to open the season as the backup running back on Kansas City’s roster. Isiah Pacheco is the unquestioned starter, but the RB2 position is up for grabs. Entering the offseason, former first-round pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire had an inside path to the job. However, Steele’s performance could push the LSU product down the depth chart.

This doesn’t mean Edwards-Helaire won’t make the roster. As evidenced by the touchdown above, Carson Steele has a physical, north-south style similar to that of Pacheco. Edwards-Helaire, meanwhile, offers more in the passing game with softer hands and as a more elusive player. Chances are, the Chiefs will use Pacheco as their main back, put Edwards-Helaire in during clear passing situations, and bring in Steele whenever Pacheco needs a breather.
