Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs Win Super Bowl 57 In Dramatic Comeback

After falling behind early in Super Bowl 57, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs pulled off a fantastic comeback to win their second title in four years. Mahomes and Jalen Hurts went back and forth all day long what will assuredly be remembered as one of the greatest games in recent memory, but ultimately Mahomes was too much for the Eagles.

First Quarter

After winning the coin toss, the Chiefs decided to defer and gave the Eagles the ball to start the game. That proved to be a mistake, as Philadelphia methodically moved the ball down the field en route to the game’s first touchdown. Jalen Hurts was the star of the drive, completing four of his five pass attempts for 54 yards and capping off the drive with a one-yard quarterback sneak.

Of course, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs offense responded with no hesitation. Playing in the Super Bowl for the third time in four years, Mahomes and the Chiefs went 73 yards in just six plays and found Travis Kelce for the game-tying touchdown.

 

After an Eagles punt, the Chiefs marched back down the field and made it to the cusp of the red zone. However, after a failed 3rd and 3, head coach Andy Reid decided to take the points. That was a bad decision, as Harrison Butker missed the 42-yard field goal attempt to keep it a 7-7 game. The Eagles took advantage of this swing in opportunity, driving into Kansas City territory as the first quarter came to a close.

Second Quarter

After the quick break, the Eagles decided to go for the big shot to start the second quarter. That aggressiveness paid off, as A.J. Brown made a phenomenal catch on a Jalen Hurts bomb. Just like that, the Eagles took a 14-7 lead.

Kansas City’s offense was unable to respond, but their defense was. Following a Chiefs punt, Jalen Hurts and company faced 3rd and 6 from midfield. Hurts went for a quarterback draw, but fumbled the ball while tucking it. Nick Bolton recovered the ball and took it all the way to the house, tying it up at 14 apiece.

Hurts made a mistake, but he didn’t let that poor play define him. Getting the ball back right after the scoop-and-score, the third-year quarterback orchestrated a beautiful drive, converting two separate 4th downs before he ran in a four-yard score to make it 21-14.

Hurts’ third touchdown of the night occurred with 2:20 left in the half, which is more than enough time for Patrick Mahomes to drive down the field. However, the Eagles defense held strong, forcing a Chiefs punt while Mahomes re-aggravated his high-ankle sprain on a 3rd and 15 scramble.

Hurts and the Eagles got the ball back with 1:22 left in the half, looking to add to their lead. While they weren’t able to make it into the endzone, they did add to their lead with a 35-yard field goal as the half expired. Just like that, the Eagles led 24-14 with 30 minutes to go.

Third Quarter

Despite his injury, Patrick Mahomes came out and started the second half under center for the Kansas City Chiefs. The quarterback appeared to be moving well, making several throws on the run and even picking up a first down on the ground. While Mahomes moved the team down the field, Isaih Pacheco put the ball in the endzone to make it a 24-21 game.

This offensive Sper Bowl continued, as Jalen Hurts and the Eagles matched the Chiefs score with one of their own. However, unlike Kansas City, the Eagles were only able to get a field goal, as the Chiefs defense was able to keep it a one-score game at 27-21.

Fourth Quarter

Holding Philadelphia turned out to be a huge deal, as Kansas City marched down the field with minimal resistance. Connecting with Juju Smith-Schuster on multiple occasions, the Chiefs cruised down into the red zone before Mahomes found a wide open Kadarious Toney for a touchdown. In a blink of an eye, the Chiefs erased a 10-point deficit to take a 28-27 lead over the Eagles in the Super Bowl.

Things went from bad to worse for the Eagles on the ensuing possession. Philadelphia went three-and-out, and Toney struck again, returning the punt all the way to the Philadelphia five-yard-line. Three plays later, Mahomes connected with a wide-open Skyy Moore for yet another touchdown. The Chiefs decided to go for one after the touchdown, making it a 35-28 game.

Great players respond to adversity, and that’s exactly what Jalen Hurts did on the ensuing drive. Highlighted by a 46-yard touchdown to Devonta Smith, Hurts drove his team down the length of the field before scoring his third rushing touchdown of the day, a Super Bowl record. To top it all off, the quarterback added a two-point conversion on the ground to tie it up at 35.

With the game tied and just over five minutes remaining, Patrick Mahomes proved why he’s the best player in football. For what felt like the 900th time in the game, the quarterback took his team down the field and answered Philadelphia’s offense. By the two-minute warning, the team was already in field goal position.

Philadelphia’s defense appeared to keep the Chiefs out of the endzone, but James Bradberry drew a very questionable defensive holding to give Kansas City a new set of downs. This allowed the Chiefs to run down the clock and set up Harrison Butker for the game-winning field goal.
