Donovan Wilson Signs Contract With Dallas Cowboys

NFL veteran safety Donovan Wilson signed a new contract with the Dallas Cowboys. Wilson, a former sixth-round pick, has spent the entirety of his professional career with the Cowboys.

Donovan Wilson hits free agency after what is, in all likelihood, the best season of his career. Starting and appearing in all 17 games, Wilson finished his season with one interception, two passes defended, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, five sacks, 101 tackles, seven tackles-for-loss, and nine quarterback hits. With his help, the Cowboys made it all the way to the NFC Divisional Round before falling to the San Francisco 49ers.

Wilson originally entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Selected by the Dallas Cowboys, the Texas A&M product spent the majority of his rookie season on the bench or on special teams. Appearing in 11 games without making a start, the rookie finished his inaugural season with just two tackles.

After his relatively unremarkable rookie season, Donovan Wilson began the 2020 campaign as a backup. However, he quickly earned the starting role and never relinquished the position. Appearing in 14 games while making 10 starts, Wilson finished his breakout campaign with two interceptions, three passes defended, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, 3.5 sacks, 71 tackles, two tackles-for-loss, and three quarterback hits.

Unfortunately, Wilson was unable to recapture his magic in 2021. While the Texas A&M product entered the season as the starter, he quickly suffered an ailment that put him on the short-term injured reserve. Overall, Wilson started three of the nine games in which he appeared, recording one pass defended, 29 tackles, and one quarterback hit.

Since signing his rookie contract, Donovan Wilson has appeared in 51 games while making 30 starts. While on the field, the safety has compiled three interceptions, 203 tackles, nine tackles-for-loss, and 13 quarterback hits.
