Pass-rusher Khalil Mack is being traded by the Chicago Bears to the Los Angeles Chargers, in return for a 2022 second-round pick and a 2023 sixth-round pick. There will be some contract tinkering but this is otherwise official. Mack has been with the Bears since 2018.

This is a big trade for the Chargers as they land one of the league’s better pass-rushers in Mack and put him alongside another top-tier pass-rusher in Joey Bosa, which will make for a fearsome duo sure to give quarterbacks nightmares. The primary question is how much cap space the Chargers will have after extending Mike Williams and now trading for Mack. Regardless, it’s obvious the Chargers are trying to go all-in by locking down play-makers on both sides of the ball.

On the part of the Bears, this may be the signal of a rebuild as they only got draft picks in return. Mack has generally been their best defensive player, and to trade him while already having another pass-rusher in Akiem Hicks about to hit free agency suggests they are looking more toward the long-term right now than the short-term.

Mack’s 2021 season was actually shortened by injury as he only played seven games, the first time he’s missed more than two games. That said, he had six sacks in those seven games and was on pace for a double-digit sack season. As a result of missing most of the season, this was the first time he did not get either Pro Bowl or All-Pro honors since his rookie year in 2014, which shows how dominant he has been.

Mack was originally drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders in 2014 and broke out in 2015 with a 15-sack season, which still remains a career-high. After a contract dispute, he was traded to the Bears in 2018 and immediately made an impact for them as well, getting 12.5 sacks in his inaugural year there. He has racked up a total of 76.5 sacks in his career.
