The NFL trade deadline is November 2nd. You can expect to hear the same players in various trade rumor reports, which will become repetitive quickly. Often, conversations between teams rarely materialize into an actual deal.
Still, New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman must consider all trade offers before next week’s deadline. For whatever reason, the team has several trade chips that could garner them an opportunity to stockpile draft picks.
The G-Men have a talent deficiency problem on their roster. So, rebuilding the base from roster spot 30-to-53 is far more important than selecting at the top of the draft order. It will take more than one acclaimed college football star to solve all of the Giants problems.
Whose Time with the New York Giants is Coming to an End at the Trade Deadline?
Engram’s Time With Big Blue Ending Soon?
Evan Engram is in the final year of his rookie deal with the Giants. The odds are high that neither side is looking to extend the relationship beyond this season. A change of scenery is the right move for Engram. It would allow him to thrive in a new environment.
Engram is a viable option if a team is looking for receiving depth at the tight end position. He functions as an alternative in the passing game when opposing defenses are shutting down the team’s primary receivers. Plus, let’s not forget Engram presents matchup problems of his own.
If an NFL team is looking for a blocking tight end, then Engram is not your man. But if you’re looking for a tall, ultra-athletic receiver, Engram is a wise addition to your team’s roster. NFL offensive coordinators love his versatility as he can line up next to the tackle, on the wing, or flex out to the slot position.
His long, smooth strides can stretch the seam on a pass route. The lone drawback to Engram’s game is his propensity to drop passes that stall potential scoring drives.

Edge Rushers Like Carter Could be in Demand
Lorenzo Carter is a true edge rusher in every regard. His ability to penetrate deep into the pocket does disrupt the quarterback’s passing lanes. Scouts feel Carter has trouble separating himself from bigger pass blockers. Still, he is an aggressive pass rusher who rarely misses a chance to hit a quarterback straight on.
Plus, Carter’s lateral mobility allows him to move along the line of scrimmage to assist in stuffing the opponent’s running game. However, he will never be mistaken for a run defender. And Carter has become a much better pass defender. Either tracking the running back coming out of the backfield or the tight end cutting across the middle of the field.
No question, he has been a bright spot for the struggling Giants defense since making his debut in 2018. But Carter’s role has been diminishing throughout the season. Partly because of him still recovering from a ruptured Achilles that took place in Week 5 of last season. But it has more to do with the emergence of rookie edge rusher Azeez Ojulari to the lineup.
If a contending team makes an enticing offer, trading Carter is the right move at this year’s deadline. His skill set is a valuable addition to any playoff potential team. Plus, a deal of this nature sends a wake-up call to the Giants locker room that any player is expendable.
Too often, actual trades consummated do not match the rumors that circulate before the deadline. Playoff contending teams are looking to add depth to the roster with the intent of making a long run in January.
If the Giants are realistic with their current situation, the front office must be open to making trades that make sense for both sides.
