Two Former Minnesota Vikings Coaches to Join Sean McDermott in Buffalo?

Sean McDermott is assembling his coaching staff, and it seems likely two former Minnesota Vikings, Brad Childress and Leslie Frazier, will be part of it.

While the playoffs continue, Sean McDermott is not so quietly assembling his coaching staff in Buffalo. Thanks in part to a narrow Pittsburgh victory over Kansas City Sunday night, former Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress has coached his last game with the Chiefs and could be hired by the Buffalo Bills as offensive coordinator as early as this week.

Greg Olson, former Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator fired late last October, is also said to be one of Buffalo’s possible choices for the position.

If hired as expected, Brad Childress will not be the only former Vikings coach to join the Bills staff. Leslie Frazier will be the Bills defensive coordinator.

Brad Childress

A coach in the NFL for 18 seasons, the 60-year-old entered the league in 1999 as the quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. McDermott worked for the Eagles the same year as an administrative coordinator of scouting.

Offensive coordinator of the Eagles from 2003 to 2005, Childress became head coach of the Minnesota Vikings in 2006. He had a 42-38 record with two playoff appearances, one in 2008 and another in 2009.

After leaving Minnesota in 2010, Childress took a year off and then served as the offensive coordinator for the Browns. He then joined the Kansas City Chiefs as the special projects coordinator before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2016.

Leslie Frazier

New Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier was Childress’ defensive coordinator from 2007-2010, and was Childress’ successor as Minnesota’s head coach. He led the team to a 10-6 record in 2012, leaving the team in 2013.

Frazier played for the Chicago Bears from 1981-1985 and earned a Super Bowl ring with the team in 1985. He also has a Super Bowl ring as a coach, earned when he was the assistant to the head coach and defensive backs coach for the Indianapolis Colts in 2006.

Like Childress, Frazier and McDermott were with the Eagles at the same time, and have coached together. Frazier was the defensive backs coach from 1999-2002.

The Buffalo Bills are expected to hire Childress, and Frazier is already a part of the McDermott staff. The head coaching experience of these two coaches, along with the other strengths and experience they bring with them, could benefit McDermott greatly in the next few months as he tries to organize the struggling Bills.
