New York Giants Free Agent Wide Receiver Possibilities

New York Giants free agent wide receiver possible acquisitions. The Giants need help at wide receiver. Here are two possible options.

The New York Giants will be looking to add offensive playmakers as free agency approaches. On March 17, the Giants will have a few options to choose from. Top tier wide receivers, including  Allen Robinson, Kenny Golladay and Chris Godwin, will all likely be franchise tagged by their respective teams and will not see the market. Or, they could be tagged and traded. For the Giants, this means they will likely have to look at other options at the wide receiver position. Here are two possible New York Giants free agent wide receiver signings that could happen this off-season.

Curtis Samuel

Curtis Samuel, a Brooklyn native, will look to get paid this off-season. He likely will not return to the Carolina Panthers, where he was drafted. Interestingly enough, Samuel is a Dave Gettleman draft pick, who used to be the general manager for the Panthers from 2013-2017.

The last time the Giants brought in a former Gettleman draftee, it was cornerback James Bradberry. Bradberry was one of the top cornerbacks in football in 2020, and proved to be one of the best free agent acquisitions from last year, alongside Blake Martinez.

Samuel appeared in 15 games in 2020, and totaled 77 receptions for 851 yards and three touchdowns. These numbers may not scream “number one wide receiver,” but Samuel is a playmaker. His versatility will likely be the other aspect that draws interest from New York, as head coach Joe Judge preaches the importance of having versatile players on the roster. Samuel’s versatility factor is that he can also become a force in the rushing game as well. In 2020, he carried the ball 41 times for 200 yards and two touchdowns, while averaging 4.9 yards per carry.

If the Giants do end up bringing in Samuel, do not expect them to be done trying to find a number one wide receiver. Samuel will be a nice piece to add for a team with an offense that lacks playmaking ability, but he will not be the only answer for the Giants.

Corey Davis

Corey Davis is another intriguing prospect for the Giants to possibly sign in mid-March. While he has not lived up to the expectations that the Tennessee Titans had when they drafted him with the fifth-overall pick in 2017, Davis finally showed what he is capable of in 2020.

Davis recorded 65 receptions for 984 yards and five touchdowns in 14 games last season. He likely would have eclipsed 1,000 yards for the first time in his career if he played in all 16 games. Davis is a reliable target, and quarterbacks had a 123.6 passer rating when throwing to him in 2020. At 6’3″ he would bring a little height to the Giants wide receiver room as well. The Giants would likely be banking on Davis to try and breakout in his first year with the team if they do decide to sign him. He has the potential to be a number one receiver.

Another interesting note, Logan Ryan said on an interview a few months back that he will be actively recruiting this off-season to try and lure players to sign with the Giants. Ryan spent time with Tennessee from 2017-2019 and was teammates with Davis. He could potentially persuade Davis to come to New York if the opportunity presents itself.

Last Word

It is likely that the Giants will not end up with one of the top wide receivers who could possibly hit the market this off-season. But the two potential candidates referenced above would still add much needed help to an offense that ranked near the bottom in every category last season. However, if the Giants sign either Samuel or Davis, do not expect their work to be done in both free agency and the draft.
