Williams has played in 77 career games and has started 38 of those. He has three career interceptions, ten forced fumbles, three recovered fumbles, and six sacks. Williams played in eight games during the 2020 season, making four starts. He served as the primary nickel back for the 49ers dating back to the 2017 season.

During the 2019 season in which the 49ers went to the Super Bowl, Williams played in 15 games and while making eight starts. He continued starting down the stretch, including in Super Bowl LIV against the Kansas City Chiefs. In the 2018 season, Williams played in 14 games and started 11 of them. In 2017, Pro Football Focus rated Williams as the 44th best at his position among qualifying cornerbacks. When he joined the 49ers in 2017, he reunited with Jeff Hafley, his position coach during his time with the Cleveland Browns and at the University of Pittsburgh.

During the 2016 season, Williams got suspended by the Browns for conduct detrimental to the team after he refused to play in their preseason opener due to an ankle injury. The Browns argued it wasn’t a severe injury, but Williams sought a second opinion that stated he would require surgery to remove bone spurs. Less than two weeks after that original suspension, the Browns released Williams.

The Chicago Bears then signed him to a contract. Williams failed the physical due to that ankle injury, though, voiding the deal. He underwent surgery that November. Before that tumultuous 2016 season in which he didn’t appear in any regular game, Williams spent the 2015 season as the primary nickel back for the Browns and appeared in 13 games, starting six of those. In 2014, Williams signed as an undrafted free agent with the Browns out of Pittsburgh. He played in 13 games and started four of those.
