Former Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold’s NFL future is in serious jeopardy. Two years after being selected 24th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, Arnold is in the midst of major controversy involving kidnapping and robbery charges stemming from an incident that occurred in February. Despite turning himself in to the authorities, the news broke Detroit’s faith in him, and the former first-round pick was released on June 29th. As of now, Arnold has been placed under house arrest, and his bail was set at $1,000,000.00.

Despite the arrest, cornerback Terrion Arnold is still generating interest from teams in need of secondary help. In fact, Arnold’s agent, Nicole Lynn, testified that four NFL teams were interested in the former Alabama Crimson Tide. Initially, the four teams interested in free agent cornerback Terrion Arnold were the Houston Texans, the Indianapolis Colts, the reigning Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks, and the New York Jets. Recently, it was reported that the Seahawks are no longer pursuing Terrion Arnold.
While the incident rightfully has teams hesitant, the New York Jets could use the secondary help, especially after finishing last season without recording an interception. In addition, Arnold would get the opportunity to play for a familiar face in head coach Aaron Glenn, who was the Lions defensive coordinator during Arnold’s rookie season. However, despite these connections, is now the right time to pursue the ex-Alabama cornerback?
The Jets Should Avoid Recently Cut Cornerback Terrion Arnold
After reaching the NFC Championship game for the first time in the 21st century during the 2023 season, the Detroit Lions were one of the hottest teams in the NFC. Head coach Dan Campbell and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson put together one of the most efficient offenses in the league. Led by 2016 first overall pick Jared Goff at quarterback, the Lions featured a stacked wide receiver room with Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, a rookie sensation, Sam LaPorta, at tight end, and an elite running back duo between Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. The defense, coached by defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, showed promise as well, led by second overall pick edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson.

After losing to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game, the Lions felt confident that their Super Bowl window was here. As a result, the Lions used the 24th overall pick to address their secondary by drafting Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold. Coming off a season with 63 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, and five interceptions, cornerback Terrion Arnold was named First-Team All-American. Expected to become the number one cornerback on the depth chart, his tenure has been inconsistent.
It was a quiet rookie season in 2024. Despite playing in 16 games, rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold failed to record a single interception. However, he did finish with 60 tackles and 10 passes defended. 2025 offered more promise, including Arnold securing his first career interception while defending eight passes. Unfortunately, Arnold was only available for eight games this year after undergoing shoulder surgery that ended his season in early December.

Unfortunately, this would be the last snaps cornerback Terrion Arnold would play for the Detroit Lions. On June 24, Arnold turned himself in to the authorities after a warrant for his arrest was issued in Florida. The charges, which could carry up to a life sentence, stem from battery and kidnapping incidents from early February 2026.
The incident is allegedly connected to a prior incident in which the former Detroit Lions cornerback was robbed of nearly $250,000 worth of items from an Airbnb he rented in Largo, FL. Authorities have suspected that the assault was orchestrated by Arnold, with six associates of the cornerback holding three victims at gunpoint and robbing them. Allegedly, Arnold formulated the attack after believing the victims stole his property at the Airbnb, despite the state’s attorney’s office being unable to find a connection between the victims and the theft of Arnold’s property.
Since the arrest, cornerback Terrion Arnold continues to refute having any knowledge of the kidnapping. Nonetheless, Arnold was placed under house arrest and issued a $1,000,000.00 bail. As he awaits a formal trial date, Arnold is free to negotiate with teams about playing in the 2026 season.
Aaron Glenn and free agent cornerback Terrion Arnold have history together in Detroit
While cornerback Terrion Arnold is currently a free agent, the New York Jets defense has undergone major changes. With a new defensive coordinator and eight new starters on defense, the team is looking to improve. After finishing the season without recording a single interception, New York is optimistic they can generate more turnovers this year. As of now, veteran Brandon Stephens and new cornerback Nahshon Wright are the projected starters. Could either be pushed out of a starting job if the Jets pursue Terrion Arnold?
Arnold will have a hard time competing
Before coming to the New York Jets, Aaron Glenn was the Detroit Lions’ defensive coordinator during Arnold’s rookie season. Glenn’s history with the cornerback could improve Arnold’s skillset; however, it will be hard for the free agent to separate himself from the competition. Taking Arnold’s uncertain legal future out of the equation, the duo of Stephens and Wright is bigger than Arnold, Wright is five inches taller than Arnold, and Stephens outweighs Arnold by 20 lbs. Not to mention the addition of rookie D’Angelo Ponds competing for the nickel corner job. This also includes 2025 third-round pick Azareye’h Thomas, who is also competing for playing time.
While Terrion Arnold can certainly earn his way to a roster spot, it’s an uphill battle. His lack of development over the last two seasons, as well as waiting for his trial, means there is too much uncertainty to risk signing him. With a need to show progress this season, New York must avoid any distractions. Especially as quarterback Geno Smith is still under investigation for the alleged domestic battery incident last month. Terrion Arnold could help the Jets, but the timing is not right for New York to pursue him.
