Report: Chiefs Heavy Favorites to Land Trent Williams In Trade

The San Francisco 49ers and superstar offensive tackle Trent Williams are still trying to resolve their contract issues, and a trade is not yet off the table. Williams, a former first-round pick, 12-time Pro Bowler, and future Hall of Famer, is one of the best players of his generation and remains one of the game’s elite left tackles despite being in his late 30s. However, he also carries a staggering $46.3 million cap hit, and the 49ers cannot justify such a high salary for any non-quarterback.

As of this posting, the two sides are trying to come to terms on a deal that will lower Williams’ cap hit while still allowing him to receive the money his elite play deserves. However, there’s no guarantee that the two sides will reach an agreement. The 49ers will part ways with him if they can’t lower his cap hit, and Casino.com’s Jason La Canfora believes the Kansas City Chiefs are the most likely trade destination for Trent Williams.

Chiefs Could Trade For Trent Williams If 49ers Cannot Rework Contract

This report doesn’t come as too much of a surprise, as the Kansas City Chiefs need more help at tackle. 2025 first-round pick Josh Simmons had a mixed bag of a rookie season, and nobody knows what the future holds for him. While he had his moments when on the field, Simmons also missed a sizable chunk of the season for an undiscolsed reason and suffered a wrist injury late in the season. In total, he finished his inaugural campaign with a 62.7 PFF grade, the 55th-best mark out of 84 eligible players.

Nobody is suggesting the Chiefs should permanently give up on Simmons, but it’s safe to assume he won’t be anywhere near as good as Trent Williams in 2026. As mentioned above, Williams is still an elite player, and the Chiefs haven’t had a true franchise left tackle since the Eric Fisher days. Seeing as Patrick Mahomes is returning from a torn ACL and probably won’t be as mobile as usual, the Chiefs should do everything in their power to support him for the upcoming season.

Kansas City has one of the best interior offensive lines in football, and adding Trent Williams at tackle would effectively fix the entire offensive line. Simmons wouldn’t need to go to the bench either, as he could easily shift to right tackle. The Chiefs released Jawaan Taylor and currently have journeyman Jaylon Moore slated to fill his spot. While Moore is an ok player, he’s better as a backup with the versatility to fill either tackle position at a moment’s notice.

The Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time since Mahomes took over last year, and they’ll need to do something to return to the postseason – especially since both of their starting cornerbacks are now on the Los Angeles Rams. This team will likely be in a lot of shootouts next year, and a Trent Williams trade would do wonders for this offense as Mahomes works his way back to full strength.
