Justin Fields Gives Blunt Reaction To Woody Johnson’s Criticism

The New York Jets are in the news for all the wrong reasons, as owner Woody Johnson recently made some unflattering comments about Justin Fields. Addressing the team’s 0-7 record, Johnson effectively threw Fields under the bus to defend first-year head coach Aaron Glenn. Reporters recently informed Fields of the comments, as he hadn’t heard them before. After hearing what Johnson had to say, the first-year Jet took the high road.

“It doesn’t bother me,” Fields said. “Of course, everybody knows I need to play better, we need to play better as a team, but it doesn’t matter how the offense does as a unit, I’m gonna get the blame. That’s what comes with the job…you can’t let anything affect your mind.”

Justin Fields Reacts To Woody Johnson’s Inflammatory Comments

For those like Justin Fields who missed the original Woody Johnson comments, the infamous owner did not hold back on criticizing his franchise’s quarterback. Saying that “any head coach with a quarterback like that” would struggle to win games, Johnson expressed clear frustration with Fields and seemingly alluded to his poor Madden rating as part of his overall criticism of the quarterback.

While Woody Johnson should not have made those comments, it’s also fair to say that Justin Fields has not played well for the New York Jets. It’s been all downhill since an impressive Week 1, as New York’s passing attack has been one of the worst in football. Over the course of the season, Fields completed 63.7% of his passes for 845 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions, with a sizable chunk of that production coming in garbage time. The team benched him for Tyrod Taylor in last week’s loss to the Carolina Panthers and has yet to officially name a starting quarterback for Week 8’s battle against the Cincinnati Bengals.
