“Great Pickup” – Cowboys Legend Praises Free Agent Signing

The Denver Broncos recently signed running back J.K. Dobbins, and former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant is thrilled with the move. The three-time Pro Bowler and one-time First-Team All-Pro took to Twitter following the signing, calling it a “great pickup” as the Broncos added a proven veteran to pair with promising second-round rookie RJ Harvey. While Bryant appears to be happy for Dobbins, one must wonder why his former team didn’t pursue the veteran during the offseason.

Cowboys Legend Dez Bryant Praises Broncos For Signing J.K. Dobbins

Dobbins joins a wide-open backfield led by Harvey and second-year downhill running back Audric Estime. While these two are light on professional experience, Dobbins should compete for the starting job and serve as a short-term lead back and mentor for this high-upside tandem. After suffering an Achilles injury in 2023, Dobbins overcame the ailment and put up a strong season with the Los Angeles Chargers. Appearing in 13 games, the running back recorded 905 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on 195 carries.

Interestingly enough, Dobbins will replace current Dallas Cowboys running back Javonte Williams in the Broncos backfield. Originally a second-round pick himself, Williams had a promising rookie season before suffering a season-ending knee injury early in 2022. While he returned to the field, he never recaptured his old form and had to sign a one-year, prove-it deal with the Dallas Cowboys, Dez Bryant’s old team.

Seeing as Dobbins signed a modest one-year, $5.5 million contract with just a $2.5 million base value, Dallas could have afforded to bring him aboard. Instead, they chose the cheaper option in Williams, Miles Sanders, and fifth-round pick Jaydon Blue. Perhaps time will prove Jerry Jones correct, but right now the Cowboys appear to have the league’s worst group of running backs, and someone like Dobbins could have helped.

Was Dez Bryant congratulating a friend and former teammate, or does his tweet imply he believes the Cowboys should have gone after him?
