Joey Bosa, Buffalo Bills, Agree to Contract

After battling injuries in 2022 and 2023, Joey Bosa stayed mostly healthy during his lone season with Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers. Unfortunately, while he played in 14 games, he never quite looked like his old self. He made the Pro Bowl on name recognition alone, as he finished the season with an unremarkable five sack, 22 tackles, five tackles-for-loss, 13 quarterback hits, and a 61.1 PFF grade. Los Angeles released him following the season, saving over $25 million in cap space in the process.

Joey Bosa originally entered the league as a first-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Selected by the Los Angeles Chargers, the Ohio State product immediately played up to his elite draft capital. Appearing in 12 games while making 11 starts, the rookie finished his inaugural season with 10.5 sacks, 41 tackles, 17 tackles-for-loss, and 21 quarterback hits while winning Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.

Bosa built on his positive debut and became one of the league’s top pass rushers in 2017. Starting in all 16 games, Bosa recorded 12.5 sacks, 70 tackles, 11 tackles-for-loss, 21 quarterback hits, and an elite 88.8 PFF grade while making the first Pro Bowl of his career. After injuries limited him to seven games in 2018, he returned to the field in 2019 and continued as one of the league’s most consistent pass rushers.

The pass rusher made three consecutive Pro Bowls from 2019 to 2021, recording at least 7.5 sacks in each season while providing elite play against the run and the pass. Joey Bosa signed a contract extension before the 2020 season and justified that investment early on. However, years of injuries made him an easy cut candidate this year.

Since signing his rookie contract, Joey Bosa has recorded 72 sacks, 343 tackles, 87 tackles-for-loss, and 156 quarterback hits.
