Future Hall of Famer Signs Contract With Los Angeles Chargers

11-year veteran edge defender Khalil Mack signed a new contract with the Los Angeles Chargers. Mack, a nine-time Pro Bowler and one-time Defensive Player of the Year, spent the 2024 season with the Los Angeles Chargers but has also played for the Oakland Raiders and Chicago Bears.

Despite his advanced age, Khalil Mack remained one of the league’s better pass rushers during the 2024 season. Starting and appearing in 16 games, Mack made another Pro Bowl while finishing the year with six sacks, 39 tackles, six tackles-for-loss, 15 quarterback hits, and a 90.2 PFF grade, the fifth-best mark in the league. Mack’s strong play helped the Chargers make the playoffs in the first season of the Jim Harbaugh Era, although they lost in the Wild Card round to the Houston Texans.

Khalil Mack originally entered the league as a first-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Selected by the Oakland Raiders, the Buffalo product had a strong rookie season on an otherwise forgettable Raiders team. Starting all 16 games, Mack finished his inaugural season with four sacks and finished third in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting. While he had a promising start to his career, Mack made the Year 2 jump and established himself as one of the game’s elite talents.

Making his first Pro Bowl in 2015, Mack finished the year with 15 sacks, 77 tackles, 23 tackles-for-loss, and 24 quarterback hits while earning First-Team All-Pro honors. This wasn’t a one-year fluke, as the edge defender won Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2016 and continued to instill fear in opposing defenses throughout his time with the Raiders. However, head coach Jon Gruden didn’t feel Khalil Mack was worth a record-setting contract extension and traded him to the Chicago Bears before the 2018 season.

Mack proved his worth with the Bears, recording 12.5 sacks and finishing second in Defensive Player of the Year voting during his first season with Chicago. Mack remained dominant throughout his tenure in the Windy City before injuries limited him to just seven games in 2021. Chicago traded Mack to the Chargers in 2022 and became their most consistent defender.
