The New York Giants signed Devin Singletary to be a cost-effective replacement for Saquon Barkley, but his new team could trade him in the coming weeks. A third-round pick by the Buffalo Bills back in 2019, Singletary began his career paired with Josh Allen before signing with the Houston Texans in 2023. Originally brought on to backup Dameon Pierce, Singletary earned the starting job midway through the season and never looked back. He parlayed his impressive season into a three-year, $16.5 million deal, but fifth-round pick Tyrone Tracy may have Wally Pip’d the veteran.
Singletary missed Week 5’s matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, allowing Tracy to start. The rookie made the most of his opportunity, rushing for 129 yards on 18 attempts (7.2 yards per carry) in the upset victory. The Giants won’t complain about having two starting-caliber running backs, but they could trade Devin Singletary if Tracy’s performance wasn’t a one-time fluke. Now 2-3 with Daniel Jones under center, the Giants will probably sell at the trade deadline, and they could clear $5 million in 2025 cap space if they send Singletary to a team like the Los Angeles Chargers or New Orleans Saints.
Giants Could Trade Devin Singletary Following Tyrone Tracy Breakout
Jim Harbaugh loves the run game, but the run game does not love the Los Angeles Chargers. After parting ways with Austin Ekeler in the offseason, Los Angeles brought in former Ravens J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards to take over starting duties. While Dobbins got off to a hot start, the former second-round pick averaged less than three yards per carry in the past two games. Gus Edwards, meanwhile, has not played up to his contract, averaging just 3.0 yards per attempt while lacking his strength and downfield ferocity. The Chargers could use another running back, and Devin Singletary might be the best option on the trade market.
Currently sitting at 2-2 with an injured Justin Herbert and an underwhelming receiving corps, the Chargers don’t stand a chance at taking down the 5-0 Chiefs for the AFC West crown. However, they are still alive in the Wild Card race and could look to add reinforcements down the stretch. Assuming they don’t fall apart over the next few weeks, a Devin Singletary trade could be just what the doctor ordered. Singletary will boost this team’s running attack and acquiring him shouldn’t require too much draft capital.
Help For Alvin Kamara
The New Orleans Saints offense runs through Alvin Kamara, but the former third-round pick can’t keep this up forever. Through five games, the five-time Pro Bowler has recorded 602 yards from scrimmage while leading the league with 114 touches. Now playing in his age-29 season, Kamara shouldn’t handle this type of workload anymore. The only problem is that the Saints don’t have an adequate backup. Taysom Hill is a jack of all trades, Jamaal Williams is nothing special, and Dennis Allen and Kendre Miller aren’t on the best of terms. The Saints could use a competent running back to fill the old Mark Ingram role, and Devin Singletary is a good trade target if the Saints remain competitive.
With that being said, the Saints probably won’t trade for Devin Singletary until they see what they have in fifth-round pick Spencer Rattler. The rookie will start with Derek Carr sidelined for a few weeks, and New Orleans can’t afford to go on a losing streak. At 2-3, the Saints already find themselves behind the Atlanta Falcons and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the race for the NFC South. If Rattler isn’t ready for the game’s biggest stage, New Orleans won’t waste a draft pick trying to salvage a lost season.
