Xavier Legette

Former NFL Executive Expects This Panthers Rookie To Dominate In Year 1

Carolina Panthers first-round pick Xavier Legette is one of the biggest high-risk, high-reward prospects from the stacked 2024 class of wide receivers. Blessed with elite physical traits, the South Carolina product has the raw potential to be one of the best receivers in the game. However, he didn’t put up any notable numbers until his fifth college season when he was a 22-year-old dominating against teenagers. As the seventh wide receiver selected in the draft class, Carolina believes the wideout can contribute right away, and one NFL analyst expects big things from the rookie.

According to former New York Giants executive Marc Ross, Xavier Legette will lead all rookie receivers in both touchdowns and yards per reception in 2024. This is a bold prediction, but is the South Carolina product up to the task?

Former NFL Executive: Xavier Legette Will Dominate As A Rookie

This is only a quick segment, so Ross doesn’t have time to justify why he believes Xavier Legette will take the league by storm. With that disclaimer in mind, it’s safe to assume that the current NFL analyst believes that Legette’s raw traits will translate in Year 1 and that his final season in college was not a fluke.

Xavier Legette has a clear path to the field, but even if he hits the ground running, it’s hard to see him leading all rookies in touchdowns or yards per reception. 2023 first-overall pick Bryce Young had a rookie season to forget, completing just 59.8% of his passes while throwing for 11 touchdowns at an abysmal clip of 5.5 yards per reception. Yes, his supporting cast made life difficult, but the Alabama product himself is still a question mark. If Legette is going to lead the league in touchdowns or yards per reception, he’ll need high-level quarterback play. Quite frankly, the odds of both Legette and Young turning into unquestioned franchise building blocks in just one offseason is highly unlikely.

Fantasy Football Outlook

Every year, the film and analytics communities go to war over a small handful of players. Last year, the analytics community was correct about Jonathan Mingo’s poor production profile outweighing his physical gifts. In 2021, the film community took the W when Amon-Ra St. Brown overcame his Day 3 draft capital to become one of the best wideouts in fantasy football. This year, Xavier Legette will be the center of many a battle.

Yes, Xavier Leggete has physical talent, and his 2023 tape is impressive. However, it’s hard to overlook just how terrible his production profile is. 2023 was the first time Legette exceeded 29 receptions for 170 receiving yards, and one must wonder why he couldn’t earn a spot in the offense before now. Yes, there are some excuses to be made, but you can always find ways to justify poor performances. Back in 2021, everyone believed Terrace Marshall’s poor college stats were due to the presence of Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase. As it turns out, Marshall wasn’t good enough to earn targets early in college, and that carried over into the NFL.

Perhaps Xavier Legette can be an outlier and establish himself as a reliable NFL receiver. However, betting on outliers is a great way to go broke, so despite what Marc Ross says, you shouldn’t invest anything more than a third-round pick in Legette during a rookie draft.
