Panthers Snag Top Free Agent From AFC Contenders

Jadeveon Clowney Contract

10-year veteran edge defender Jadeveon Clowney signed a new contract with the Carolina Panthers. Clowney, the first-overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, spent the 2023 season with the Baltimore Ravens but has also played for the Houston Texans, Cleveland Browns, Seattle Seahawks, and Tennessee Titans.

Despite officially being on the wrong side of 30, the 2023 season was one of the best of Clowney’s career. A featured member of arguably the best defense in football, the South Carolina product finished the season with 9.5 sacks, 43 tackles, nine tackles-for-loss, and 19 quarterback hits. The edge defender helped power the Ravens to the AFC Championship Game and even helped hold the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs to just 17 points.

Jadeveon Clowney originally entered the league as the first-overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Selected by the Houston Texans, Clowney’s career got off to a rough, injury-plagued start. The edge defender only appeared in four games as a rookie, making two starts while recording seven tackles and three tackles for loss. The 2015 season was a little bit better, as he recorded 4.5 sacks, 40 tackles, and eight tackles-for-loss in the 13 games. Still, this production isn’t what the Texans expected.

Clowney finally played up to his draft billing in 2016. Starting and appearing in 14 games, the first-overall pick finished the season with six sacks, 52 tackles, 16 tackles-for-loss, and 17 quarterback hits while earning the first Pro Bowl selection of his career. This was just the beginning, as he recorded 18.5 sacks, 79 tackles, 37 tackles-for-loss, and 42 quarterback hits over the next two seasons.

Following three straight Pro Bowl selections, Jadeveon Clowney hit free agency and had to settle for a series of one-year contracts. The pass rusher remained productive from 2019 to 2023 but never received any multi-year deals. Prior to 2023, his best season came when he recorded nine sacks with the Cleveland Browns in 2019.
