The Sean Payton Record Win Over the Denver Broncos

Looking at the Sean Payton record win for the New Orleans Saints against the Denver Broncos puts him into the NFL record books.

The New Orleans Saints notched their first win against the Denver Broncos during the Sean Payton era. This was a very strange game due to Covid issues as the Broncos started a wide receiver at quarterback. Payton will take this win as it gave him the last win he needed in order to have beaten all 31 other NFL teams as a head coach. This Sean Payton record win might have been strange but still counts in the record book and towards Payton’s legacy.

The Sean Payton Record Win

Sean Payton Overall Record

Sean Payton has been the head coach of the New Orleans Saints for 14 seasons. Following the Broncos win, Payton improves his overall record as head coach to 140-79. With this win, the Saints also secure their ninth winning season under Payton. Payton has coached the Saints to no worse than seven wins in each of his seasons and only had four losing seasons in this time period.

Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints now have only one win against five teams in the NFL. All of these teams are in the AFC due mostly to scheduling. The Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Las Vegas Raiders, and New England Patriots are the teams. The Saints have multiple wins against every other team in the NFL. Divisional matchups dominate yearly records. Because of this, Payton’s most wins come against the Atlanta Falcons at 19. In the NFC but outside of the division, the Saints have beaten the San Francisco 49ers the most, seven times. In the AFC, Payton has the most wins against the Jacksonville Jaguars at four.

Record Win in Week 12

Sunday’s win over the Denver Broncos was very unorthodox. The Broncos were without a single starting quarterback and were forced to use a combination of running backs and wide receivers to take snaps. Defensively, the New Orleans Saints were incredibly hot going into this game. This seemed to be a sure recipe for disaster for Denver. The Broncos only completed a single pass in the entire game for 12 yards. Denver’s offense in total only managed to gain 112 yards in the game.

The Saints offense was vanilla as well, only completing nine passes all game. This gameplan was seemingly by design as the Saints expected a game where their defense would be dominant. The Saints rushing attack led the team with 229 total yards on the ground. Taysom Hill improved to 2-0 as a starter as the New Orleans started their current three-game road trip with a victory. The Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles are next on this trip.

In the NFL, almost any team can compete any given week. Denver was severely hampered going into this game. As the saying goes, a win is a win. This win was significant to Sean Payton’s legacy as a head coach. Sean Payton has now beaten all 31 other NFL teams in his 14-year career with the New Orleans Saints. The Sean Payton record win might have been under abnormal circumstances, but the record books will still reflect his accomplishments.
