Fringe New York Jets Who could Make an Impact in 2020

The New York Jets experienced a ton of roster turnover in 2020. Here are some fringe new york Jets who could make an impact this year.

NFL teams have cut down their rosters to 53 in anticipation of the start of the 2020 season leaving many players on the fringe for teams like the New York Jets. They have assembled their active roster, and have filled their larger 2020 practice squad. The roster is somewhat unremarkable.

After dealing safety Jamal Adams, only Sam Darnold and Le’Veon Bell remain as true household names. Still, the team has undergone an intense roster turnover and projections for how they will perform in 2020 are largely divided. As such, the door will be open for some under the radar players to make their presence felt. Here are some fringe Jets who could make an impact in 2020.

Bryce Huff – EDGE

The Jets have lacked a true edge-rushing presence for quite some time now. Jordan Jenkins has shown some flashes, but he’s not quite a double-digit sack producer. Tarell Basham projects as the opposite side starter. Still, Gregg Williams is known for his creative personnel usage and there should be a good bit of rotation at the position in 2020.

Undrafted rookie Bryce Huff is an interesting piece of this rotation. It is difficult for undrafted players to make the final roster, so Huff has already bucked the odds. If Basham and Jenkins struggle to produce, Huff could be an intriguing player to try and spark the defense. Huff certainly has the size and speed to be productive in the NFL. If Williams decides to get him some snaps, Huff could produce early in his NFL career. A couple of sacks could put him on a path to gain starting experience late in 2020.

Vyncint Smith – Wide Receiver

If there is one position that is lacking depth in 2020, it is wide receiver. The New York Jets have quite possibly the most lackluster receiver depth chart in the league heading into week 1. One player missing from that chart is Vyncint Smith. Smith is entering his second year with the Jets. Starting four games for the team in 2019, Smith is somehow one of the more tenured Jets in their receiver room. Smith is set to miss the first three to six weeks of the season with a core muscle injury, but his return could prove crucial for Sam Darnold.

Smith has a solid frame and is a bit slight. The main aspect of his game is his speed. Smith ran a 4.36 at his college pro day and this speed translates to the field. On most rosters, Smith would be an afterthought, but his return will be welcome for gang green in 2020.

One thing Sam Darnold has known throughout his career is roster turnover. Welcoming back Smith’s speed should be a big boost for the offense despite Smith’s lack of elite production in the past. Expect Smith to see a good portion of offensive snaps upon his return. This number could increase if new players like Denzel Mims or Breshad Perriman struggle early in the season. Smith’s speed makes him a likely candidate for chunk plays. These could translate into solid numbers for the young speedster.

Trevon Wesco – Tight End/Fullback

Quite possibly the deepest position group on the 2020 Jets is tight end. Chris Herndon is an exciting player who many expect to break out this season. Ryan Griffin returns after an impressive 2019 campaign. However, it is second-year player Trevon Wesco who could make the biggest leap in 2020.

One thing should be clear about Wesco’s production, it will likely not be based on huge box score numbers. Wesco is a large tight end, who will likely take on the H-Back role in 2020. His improved blocking has been touted during the 2020 offseason, and this could be a welcome development for the likes of the offense as a whole. If Le’Veon Bell sees a large production uptick in 2020, expect Wesco to be a part of that. Wesco is also no slouch as a receiver and could exceed some of his highest expectations with a good receiving performance in 2020.
