Laremy Tunsil and Houston Texans Agree to Contract Extension

Laremy Tunsil and the Houston Texans have agreed to a contract extension. The two sides agreed to a mega deal on Friday in the midst of the draft.

The Houston Texans have shown Laremy Tunsil the money. The Texans have signed left tackle Laremy Tunsil to a three-year, $66 million contract. The deal averages $22 million per year, includes $57.85 million in guaranteed money, with a $13 million signing bonus, and will pay out $40 million in the first two years of the deal. This extension makes Tunsil the highest paid offensive lineman in NFL history. Lane Johnson, the right tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles, was previously the highest paid offensive lineman at $18 million per year after he signed his contact in 2019.

Time in Houston

The Texans acquired Tunsil and Kenny Stills prior to the start of the 2019 NFL season by giving up a second-round pick and two first-rounders, in a deal with the Miami Dolphins, who drafted Tunsil 13th overall in 2016. He slid to the Dolphins, after being projected to be drafted much higher, because a viral video that showed him in a gas mask smoking marijuana leaked right before the draft.

In 2019, his first with the Texans, Tunsil was named to his first Pro Bowl, after helping Houston improve from allowing an NFL worst 68 sacks in 2018 to 49 in 2019 (ranked 25th). Tunsil did lead the league in penalties in 2019, with 17, 14 of which were false starts.

Last Word

Tunsil was set to enter the 2020 season, the final year on his previous contract, at a price of $10 million. Per reports, Tunsil did not have an agent and negotiated the deal directly with Texans head coach and general manager, Bill O’Brien. Tunsil will be on the market again prior to turning 30 years old so he could be in line for another massive payday if he continues to produce.
