Javon Hargrave Signs With Philadelphia Eagles

Javon Hargrave had a career year in his fourth season in the NFL. Hargrave played in all 16 games in 2019, starting in 13 of those games. Despite starting one less game than he did in 2018, Hargrave saw his snap share increase to 68 percent. That is the first time he played over half the snaps in his career. Hargrave turned that into 60 tackles, seven tackles for a loss, six hits on the quarterback, and four sacks. He also forced a fumble for just the second time in his career. Hargrave set career bests in solo tackles, assisted tackles, tackles for loss, and quarterback hits.

Hargrave has been consistent and reliable in his four years with the Steelers. He won the starting defensive tackle job from Daniel McCullers as a rookie in 2016 and has never looked back. In his career, he has 168 combined tackles, 22 tackles for loss, 22 quarterback hits, and 14.5 sacks. His tackle numbers have steadily increased each season, even as his snap share had decreased in hist first three years. In Pittsburgh’s predominately 3-4 defensive scheme, Hargrave has proven to be a solid line stuffer.

After graduating from North Rowan High School in Spencer, North Carolina, Hargrave attended South Carolina State University. He had an instant impact for the Bulldogs, winning Freshman All-American honors. Hargrave would record 16 sacks as a junior, and win back to back FCS All-American honors as a junior and senior. He would finish his college career with more than 30 sacks. The Pittsburgh Steelers would make Hargrave the 89th pick of the 2016 NFL Draft, taking him in the 3rd round.
