Arik Armstead Signs Extension With San Francisco 49ers

Arik Armstead has been a member of the San Francisco 49ers since joining the league in 2015. The talented defensive end really flourished in 2019 when he had 54 tackles and 10 sacks. He plays defensive end on a team rich with defensive lineman and pass rushers. Dee Ford and Nick Bosa both play on the line, so he’s not able to be featured as an every-down player, which makes his stats all the more impressive. Armstead also forced two fumbles last season and recovered another. He also managed to break up two passes from his defensive end position.  The 49ers would love to resign Armstead, but cap space is limited. Also, the talent they have at that position could force their hand and leave Armstead looking for a new home.
Armstead initially entered the league in 2015 as the 17th pick of the first round.  He played his college football at Oregon in the Pac 12. Armstead has tremendous size standing six foot seven and weighs in at 290 pounds. He showed solid athletism at the NFL Combine, running a 5.10 40 yard dash and benching 220 pounds 24 times. Arik Armstead also impressed with a 34-inch vertical jump. The 49ers selected him with their 17th pick, marking him as the first of two consecutive Oregon defensive lineman they’d draft in back to back years. They took teammate Deforest Buckner in 2016 with the 7th pick.

In total, Armstead has been with the 49ers for five seasons. Arik Armstead has 152 tackles and 19 sacks during his time in San Francisco. Armstead improved each year and really exploded in 2019 becoming a key member of arguably the league’s best defense. Fans in the Bay Area are certainly going to be sad to see him go if he indeed signs elsewhere.

Armstead picked a good time to have a great year. Typically players excel during their free-agent year and Armstead has certainly done so as well. He has set himself up to cash in this off-season.
