Tom Brady Sets NFL Rushing Record

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady set an NFL rushing record when he recorded two rushing touchdowns on Thursday Night Football.

Tom Brady just keeps breaking records. While most associate Brady with his elite arm and play diagnosis, the 42-year old set a record with his legs in Thursday’s win over the New York Giants. Brady recorded two rushing touchdowns and, in doing so, became NFL’s all-time leader in rushing touchdowns by a player in their 40’s. Brady’s legs helped power New England to a convincing 35-14 victory over Daniel Jones and the Giants.

Tom Brady Sets NFL Rushing Record Against New York Giants

Brady entered Thursday Night’s action trailing only Doug Flutie for the distinguished honor. The greatest quarterback of all-time tied the Boston College legend in the final seconds of the first half before taking the lead on the game-clinching touchdown in the fourth quarter. This was his fifth touchdown since turning 40 and his third on the season.

While Brady holds the touchdown lead, he still has a long way to go to overtake Flutie in rushing yards. According to Pro Football Reference, Flutie recorded 212 rushing yards after turning 40. Brady, meanwhile, sits at 66. Barring something completely unforeseen, Brady probably won’t overtake Flutie for total yardage.

Despite his two rushing touchdowns, Brady surprisingly didn’t add a single score through the air. While he finished his night with 334 yards and 8.1 yards-per-attempt, Brady also threw an interception and lost a fumble. Overall, the six-time Super Bowl champion came out of the gate slow but recovered with a solid outing.

Injuries Pile Up

Thursday Night Football is notorious for injuries, and this game was no exception. Wide receiver Josh Gordon suffered a knee injury early in the contest and was clearly shaken up after the play. Gordon finished with just one catch on the night as Jakobi Meyers and Gunner Olszewski filled in admirably in his place. Meyers recorded four receptions for 54 yards while Gunner two receptions for 34 yards.

The same could not be said for safety Patrick Chung. Chung suffered a chest injury midway through the contest and did not return to the field. As of this posting, the team has not released the severity of the injury. Other notable players spotted near the medical tent include Dont’a Hightower and Matthew Slater.

The Defense is Still Amazing

The Patriots’ defense is playing at an absurdly high level. The unit entered the game leading the league in just about every defensive metric imaginable and added to their dominance by holding the Giants to just seven points on offense. The unit recorded three interceptions, one sack, one fumble, and scored two touchdowns, including a blocked punt. Jamie Collins is playing like an All-Pro and this secondary is one of the most talented units in recent memory.

The defense was good even when the Giants made big plays. New York’s lone scoring drive came on a 64-yard Golden Tate reception, but the defense did their job on the play. Jonathan Jones was in tight coverage on Tate and even put his hand on the ball to break up the pass. However, the deflection landed right in Tate’s arms and the former Detroit Lion took it in for the touchdown. You can’t really blame the defense for that, as Jones did what he was supposed to. Sometimes, the ball just doesn’t bounce your way.

New England gets a mini-bye to sit back and prepare for their Week 7 opponent, the New York Jets. Sam Darnold should be healthy for this rematch, and the world will see these two teams face off on Monday Night Football.
