New England Patriots, Tom Brady Agree To Extension

Tom Brady will not spend 2019 playing in a contract year. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the quarterback and the New England Patriots have agreed to a “short term” contract extension. The exact length and financial value have yet to be revealed to the public. Brady turned 42 just yesterday, and this contract represents a well-deserved belated birthday gift from the organization.

Update: Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, it’s a two-year deal and Brady will earn $23 million. The deal will be adjusted on an annual basis.

Tom Brady Agrees to Extension With New England Patriots

Tom Brady, fresh off winning his sixth Super Bowl championship, was entering the final year of his contract. Historically, the Patriots prefer to extend Brady before his final season, and 2019 is no exception. The deal keeps him with the team until 2021, and Brady should have a few more years left in his tank.

Brady carried a $27 million cap hit prior to the extension, so it’s safe to say that this extension should lower his cap number. Brady previously re-worked his contract prior to the start of the 2018 season, adding additional incentives. Even though he didn’t reach said incentives, the current CBA dictates that a contract cannot be extended or reworked in less than one calendar year.

Brady initially entered the league as the 199th pick in the 2000 NFL Draft. Since entering the league, the Michigan product has won six Super Bowls, four Super Bowl MVP’s, three regular season MVP’s, and countless passing titles. The 42-year old is entering his 20th season in the league and hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down. He’s widely accepted as the greatest quarterback to ever play the game and has spent the entirety of his career in New England. Additionally, Brady has also revolutionized late-career fitness through the TB12 regiment. Brady credits his longevity to his intense diet, and other athletes like Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers have followed in Brady’s footsteps.
