Cleveland Browns Trade Emmanuel Ogbah to Kansas City Chiefs for Eric Murray

The Kansas City Chiefs announced via Twitter that they’ve acquired defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah in a trade with the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday. The tweet by the Chiefs confirms that they are trading reserve safety Eric Murray to the Browns in exchange for Ogbah.

Cleveland Browns Swap Emmanuel Ogbah for Eric Murray

Emmanuel Ogbah was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Cleveland is trading Ogbah as he enters the final year of his rookie contract, where he is slated to earn $1,351,315 in base salary, according to spotrac. Ogbah had been on the NFL’s trading block for weeks, and a deal has finally gotten done between Browns’ GM John Dorsey and Chiefs’ GM Brett Veach.

During his three-year tenure with the Browns, Ogbah appeared in 40 games, starting them all. In those 40 games, the 25-year-old edge defender registered 122 total tackles, 12.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and 17 passes defended.

As for Eric Murray, the 24-year-old safety has appeared in 45 games for the Chiefs but has only made 11 starts over the past three seasons. In his 45 games, Murray has 88 total tackles, one sack, one fumble recovery, seven passes defended, and one interception to his credit.

Why the Trade Makes Sense

While receiving a little-known player in Eric Murray for a player whose name is known by the majority of fans in Emmanuel Ogbah may be puzzling, this is still a logical trade for both sides. Cleveland addresses its need for a safety alongside Damarious Randall, and the Chiefs get started on the resurrection of their pass rush after they released Justin Houston and traded Dee Ford.

Cleveland can now shift its attention to filling other holes on the roster in the final stages of free agency and by adding depth in the NFL Draft. The same goes for Kansas City, as it can now shift its attention to the exact same thing.
