Jordan Reed took his first step towards seeing playing time during the preseason.
The Washington Redskins announced Sunday they’ve activated Reed off the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Reed missed the entirety of training camp and the team’s first two preseason games with an injured left big toe. But he recently passed a physical, clearing the way for him to return to practice.

Washington Redskins Tight End Jordan Reed Activated From PUP List
Reed is coming off a fairly dynamic campaign in which he caught 66 passes for 686 yards and six touchdowns. All three of those totals ranked seventh or higher among tight ends in 2016. This despite missing two games due to a concussion and another due to a separated shoulder. For his efforts, Reed received the first Pro Bowl invitation of his career.
The soon-to-be sixth-year man out of Florida will wear a customized orthotic in his cleat for the time being. While on the PUP list, Reed caught passes in a non-contact setting in order to get used to the device. It’s unclear whether or not Reed will play the entire season with the orthotic.
Reed signed a five-year, $46.75 million extension with the team ahead of the 2016 season. It contains $14 million in guaranteed money and a further $8 million in injury guarantees. His $9.35 million annual contract value is the fourth highest in the league among tight ends, according to OverTheCap.com.
The Redskins drafted Reed in the third round (85th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft. In his first four seasons as a pro, the 27-year-old racked up a total of 248 receptions and 20 touchdown catches. During the team’s Week 4 encounter with the Cleveland Browns last year, a 31-20 win, Reed became the fastest tight end in league history to eclipse the 200 career reception plateau.
‘Skins fans’ first opportunity to see Reed in action takes place a week from Sunday when the team hosts the Cincinnati Bengals. Kickoff from FedEx Field takes place at 4:30 PM ET with the game being nationally televised on FOX.
