Davis Webb: The Future of New York Giants Football

Davis Webb: In his final collegiate season, Webb completed 62% of his passes for 4,295 yards and 37 touchdowns with only 12 interceptions.

When the third round came along in the 2017 NFL Draft, Giants fans were wondering what position we would select. Would the Giants select a bruising running back like D’Onta Foreman, or an offensive lineman such as Dorian Johnson? However, to everybody’s surprise, the Giants selected quarterback Davis Webb out of Cal. Before the draft, Davis Webb was a consensus second round to early third round pick. Strictly as a value pick, the Giants did very well with adding him to the roster. The question is, will he be a career backup, or could he become a football icon in New York?

Dominant Senior Year

In his final collegiate season, Webb completed 62% of his passes for 4,295 yards and 37 touchdowns with only 12 interceptions. He ranked sixth in FBS in passing yards and eighth in touchdowns. The only quarterbacks that ranked ahead of him that were drafted are Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes. One thing that stands out is his game log against perennial powerhouse USC. On the road at USC, Webb passed for 333 yards along with two touchdowns and one interception. Playing against one of the best college football teams just as they were hitting their stride, Webb put up impressive numbers. Without the greatest supporting cast, it is going to be difficult for him to produce wins. However, Webb showed he could still shred a defense through the air.

Learn from One of the Best

Davis Webb has the luxury to sit behind future Hall of Fame quarterback Eli Manning. Manning has been the heart and soul of the Giants for the past 13 seasons. He has a few seasons left and the Giants are currently all in on winning him his third Super Bowl. Webb will be able to learn from one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Webb will obviously have trouble adjusting to a pro style offense (ex. Jared Goff), but he is put in a much better position than Goff. Goff was thrown into the mess known as the Los Angeles Rams and he was destined for failure. Webb has zero expectations right now and all he needs to do is learn from one of the best.

Another notable quarterback out of Cal actually sat behind a Hall of Famer for a few seasons before he was named the starting quarterback. This quarterback is none other than two-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers sat behind Brett Favre for a few seasons to adjust to the different style of play. Davis Webb is not Aaron Rodgers, but he has been placed into a great situation to succeed similar to Rodgers ten years ago.

Chance for Stardom

Davis Webb has the physical tools to make it in the NFL. Standing at 6’5”, he possesses a strong arm as well as good pocket presence. Most analysts including myself agree that Webb must work on his decision-making. This is something that I believe he can fix since he will not be thrust into the starting lineup. He will have plenty of time to work on this and work with one of the best quarterbacks in football. The sky is the limit with Davis Webb, and I most certainly he will be the future starting quarterback for the New York Giants.
