Chicago Bears Quarterback Brian Hoyer Breaks Arm

During the Chicago Bears 26-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thursday Night, quarterback Brian Hoyer broke his left arm. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Hoyer will likely require surgery, putting his season in jeopardy.

Hoyer suffered the broken arm in the second quarter after being sacked. He was then taken immediately to the locker room for x-rays, which revealed that Hoyer indeed suffered a broken arm. Hoyer reportedly broke his radius, which is one of the forearms two large bones.

Hoyer suffered the broken arm when the Packers pass rush of Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers got to the veteran quarterback in the second quarter for a sack. Hoyer’s arm got bent in an awkward angle, and the 31-year-old Hoyer remained on the ground, and was clearly in tremendous pain. Hoyer would finish the game 4-of-11 for 49 yards.

Bears third-string quarterback Matt Barkley would enter the game in relief of Hoyer. The last time Barkley played was in 2014 when he was a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. For his career, Barkley was 30-of-50 for 300 yards with zero touchdown passes and four interceptions. Barkley, who is in his fourth NFL season, was originally drafted by the Eagles in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

The Bears signed Barkley to their practice squad back in September after he was released by the Arizona Cardinals, who acquired him in a trade with the Eagles. Chicago was forced to activate the 26-year-old Barkley from the practice squad after Jay Cutler went down with a sprained thumb on his throwing hand in week two.

Since taking over for Cutler, Hoyer has enjoyed personal success by throwing for 1,445 yards with six touchdowns and zero interceptions, while completing 67% of his passes. Prior to the Packers game, Hoyer had thrown for over 300 yards in three straight games. Unfortunately for Hoyer, his personal success had not translated into team wins, as the Bears have gone 1-4 in Hoyer’s starts.

Hoyer was signed by the New England Patriots as an undrafted free-agent in 2009 out of Michigan State, and has played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans.

Jay Cutler’s future with the Bears is shaky at best. The veteran quarterback is under contract with Chicago until 2020 after signing a seven-year, $126 million contract with $54 million guaranteed back in January 2014. For his career, Cutler has thrown for 31,781 yards with 205 touchdowns and 143 interceptions while completing 62% of his passes.
