Hockey is finally back! Normally we’d be closing in on the mid-way point of the regular season, however, we’re in a different world. Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date’s historical significance to the game. We’ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here’s our look at this date in hockey history for January 20th featuring Henrik Sedin.

Henrik Sedin Reaches 1,000 Points

2017: The Vancouver Canucks forward becomes the 85th player to net 1,000 points in his career. Sedin gets the milestone when he scores in the second period of a 2-1 win over the Florida Panthers. The Swede gets the pass from brother Daniel Sedin and beats former teammate Roberto Luongo.

Henrik is the 35th player to get 1,000 points with the same team and is the fourth player from Sweden. He finishes with 1.070 points and retires at the end of the 2017-18 season.

1946: Chicago Blackhawks forward Max Bentley scores three times in a 9-1 win over the New York Rangers. A record 19,749 gather at Chicago Stadium to watch the game.

1970: Detroit Red Wings great Gordie Howe scores his 10th and final All-Star Game goal in 4-1 Eastern Conference victory. Bobby Hull gets a goal and an assist for get MVP honours.

1977: Johnny Wilson‘s Colorado Rockies beats Larry Wilson‘s Red Wings in a 3-1 win. It’s third battle of brother head coaches and first in 23 years.

1982: Wayne Gretzky becomes the first player in NHL history to have 12 hat tricks before age 21. He gets three goals and two assists in an 8-6 Edmonton Oilers victory over the St. Louis Blues.

1983: Philadelphia Flyers forward Darryl Sittler becomes the 17th player to get 1,000 career points. He gets a goal and an assist in a 5-2 win over the Calgary Flames.

1989: Pittsburgh Penguins centre Mario Lemieux becomes the second player to score 50 goals in less than 50 games. Lemieux scores in the first period of a 7-3 loss to the Winnipeg Jets. However, he’s not pleased with the milestone after the loss. He finishes with 85 goals and 199 points, which is second to only Gretzky.

2003: Colorado Avalanche goalie Patrick Roy becomes the first goalie to play in 1,000 regular season games. He makes 29 saves in a 1-1 tie at home with the Dallas Stars.

2018: Chicago’s Patrick Kane suprasses 800 points in a 7-3 loss to the New York Islanders. Kane nets two goals and an assist while the Isles Ryan Pulock gets five points.
