Normally we’d be in the closing in on the mid-way point of the regular season, however, we’re in a different world. Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date’s historical significance to the game. We’ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Alex Ovechkin Gets 1,000th Point
2017: The Washington Capitals winger becomes the 84th player to get to 1,000 career points. He gets the milestone point just 35 seconds into the Capitals’ 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Ovechkin wastes little time getting point No. 1,001 with a power-play tally 8:06 into the second period.
The Moscow native comes into the 2020-21 season with 706 goals and 1,278 points. He is currently in eighth on the all-time list and just just two behind Mike Gartner and trails Phil Esposito by 11.
Other Notable Events
1941: The Toronto Maple Leafs rout the New York Americans, 9-0, in a penalty-free game. It’s the second straight game without a penalty for the Maple Leafs.
1948: Montreal Canadiens forward Toe Blake breaks his ankle when he crashes into the boards in a 3-1 loss to the New York Rangers. Blake’s playing career ends, but he goes on to be one of the best coaches in league history.
1953: Montreal native and Rangers goalie Gump Worsley gets his first NHL shutout with a 7-0 win over the Habs. Worsley fills in for the injured Chuck Rayner and gets two goals from Jack Stoddard.
1976: The Philadelphia Flyers are the first NHL team to defeat the Soviet Red Army with a 4-1 win. Reggie Leach, Rick MacLeish, Joe Watson and Larry Goodenough each score to down the Soviets. Vladislav Tretiak makes 49 saves to keep his team in the game.
1983: Pat Hughes of the Edmonton Oilers scores two shorthanded goals in 25 seconds to set a new record. Hughes is the first player to break a record set by Wayne Gretzky in a 7-5 win over the St. Louis Blues.
1986: Los Angeles Kings great Marcel Dionne scores twice in a 4-4 tie with the Blues. Dionne becomes the first player to get 20 goals in his first 15 seasons.
1990: New York Islanders centre Pat LaFontaine extends his goal-scoring streak to 11 games in an 8-4 win over the Minnesota North Stars. LaFontaine also hands out five assists as he surpasses Mike Bossy‘s team record.
2000: Carolina Hurricanes forward Gary Roberts becomes the sixth player to get 300 goals and 2,000 penalty minutes. Roberts scores in a 4-3 loss to Philadelphia.
