Today in Hockey History: Detroit Red Wings Terry Sawchuk Gets 100th Shutout

We’re normally starting up another hockey season, but we’re in a different world. Last Word on Hockey is still going to look back at each date’s historical significance to the game. We’ll remember the moments that shaped the sport of hockey that happened on this day. Here’s our look at this date in hockey history for October 28th, featuring Terry Sawchuk.

Terry Sawchuk Records 100 Shutouts

1962: The Detroit Red Wings goalie gets his 100th shutout (90 in the regular season and 10 in the post-season) with a 2-0 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Sawchuk stops 24 shots and Bill Gadsby assists on both goals for the Red Wings. Parker MacDonald and Gordie Howe provide the goals for Detroit.

Sawchuk finishes his career with 103 regular-season shutouts and 12 in the playoffs. The Winnipeg native wins four Stanley Cups and four Vezina Trophies in his career. He retires in 1969-70 with the New York Rangers.

Other Notable Events

1978: Bobby Orr scores his 207th and final goal in the NHL for the Chicago Black Hawks. Detroit beats Chicago, 7-2, as Orr beats Rogie Vachon for his final tally. Knee problems catch up to Orr and he’s forced to retire on Nov. 8. Orr finishes his career with the most points and goals for defenceman.

1979: The Quebec Nordiques meet their provincial rivals, the Montreal Canadiens, for the first time at Le Colisee in Quebec City. Jamie Hislop scores with less than five minutes to go in regulation to give the Nordiques a 5-4 victory over the Canadiens.

1980: Mike Bossy gets his first of his nine hat tricks for the 1980-81 season for the New York Islanders. He pots three goals in a 6-4 win over the Habs en route to his record-setting nine hat tricks.

1993: The Maple Leafs extend their record season-opening win streak to 10 with a 4-2 win over the Blackhawks. Wendel Clark scores twice and Felix Potvin makes 40 saves for Toronto.

Ron Francis reaches 1,000 career points with a goal and an assist in the Pittsburgh Penguins 7-3 loss to Quebec.

2000: Randy McKay and John Madden each scores four goals as the New Jersey Devils rout the Penguins, 9-0. McKay and Madden are the first teammates to score four goals in a game since Odie Cleghorn and Sprague Cleghorn do it for Montreal in January 1922.

2006: Sidney Crosby gets his first career hat trick in the Pens’ 8-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Evgeni Malkin gets a goal in his fifth straight game for Pittsburgh.

2018: Jonathan Marchessault scores on a penalty shot at 2:24 of overtime to give the Vegas Golden Knights a 4-3 win against the Ottawa Senators. It’s the 15th game decided by an OT penalty shot.
