Nicolas Aube-Kubel Re-Signs with the Flyers
Aube-Kubel split this past season between the AHL and NHL. Playing for the Flyers, Aube-Kubel scored seven goals and added eight assists for 15 points in 36 games. He also appeared in 13 postseason games where he recorded two goals and one assist.
Aube-Kubel appeared in nine games for the Flyers during the 2018-19 season failing to register a point.
He was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the second round, 48th overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
What This Means for the Future
Aube-Kubel put in his time in the AHL spending three and a half years with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms before finally cracking the NHL roster full time this past season. He developed well in the AHL, showing he had some offensive touch scoring 34 goals and 42 assists over the span of 126 games from 2017 to 2019.
Coming into the NHL Aube-Kubel secured his role in the bottom six with the Flyers. He provided some depth scoring while also taking part physically. Aube-Kubel lead the Flyers in hits after being recalled in December with 82 over the span of his 36 games. He also lead the team in hits in the postseason with 52 in 13 games.
With the Flyers still having seven players left to re-sign and just short of $8 million in cap space, it was important to get Aube-Kubel locked up on a cap-friendly deal. He helps solidify the depth in the bottom six, with players such and Nate Thompson, Derek Grant and Tyler Pitlick potentially walking in free agency due to cap restraints.
With three important defencemen left to sign in Robert Hagg, Justin Braun and Philippe Myers as well as back up goaltender Brian Elliott, the Flyers still have some work to do. They’ll need to move out some money if they want to bring back all these players. So finding more cheap deals like the one they signed Aube-Kubel to will be important moving forward.
