The Montreal Canadiens have announced that forward Lukas Vejdemo has been re-signed to a one-year two-way deal. This deal pays him $750,000 at the NHL level and $105,000 in the AHL.

Vejdemo’s future was unclear. He was not included on the Return to Play list for the postseason. This one-year signing by general manager Marc Bergevin indicates that the Canadiens believe that he can be a productive and affordable option. This signing gives him one year to prove his value to the big club.

Vejdemo was originally drafted in the third round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. He spent the next four years playing for Djurgardens in the Swedish Hockey League. In this time he accumulated 19 goals and 47 points in 147 games.

Vejdemo made the move to North America in 2018 to play for the Laval Rocket of the AHL. For the Rocket, he posted 22 goals and 48 points in 113 games in the AHL. He scored his first goal in his seventh NHL game against the Nashville Predators on March 10.

Listed at 6’2″ and 196 pounds, Vejdemo is 24 years old. He will enter next season’s training camp with a real opportunity to make the big club.

What This Means for the Future

Should he outperform Jake Evans in training camp, he may find himself spending some time at the centre on the fourth line. If not, he is capable of being productive on the wing. Either way, with his skill set and cap, hit, he will likely be deployed in Montreal’s bottom-six forward group next season. Regardless of position.

In a flat cap world, players such as Lukas Vejdemo are a valuable asset for any team’s bottom six. This is particularly true for a team such as Montreal. They can use their cap space to accumulate assets by absorbing a bad contract or two from teams that simply need to make space.
