Pittsburgh Penguins Dominik Simon Undergoes Shoulder Surgery

Dominik Simon

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced that centre Dominik Simon underwent successful shoulder surgery and will be sidelined for the next six to seven months. The team announced the news Thursday evening.

Dominik Simon Injured

Simon was injured in a game against the San Jose Sharks on February 29th. He left the game and did not return.

Playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins this season, Simon scored seven goals and added 15 assists for 22 points in 64 games played. His possession numbers were 53.2 percent Corsi-For and a relative Corsi of +3.0.

Throughout his five-year NHL career, Simon has played solely for the Pittsburgh Penguins. In 173 career games played, he has scored 19 goals and added 45 assists for 64 points to go along with 46 minutes in penalties. He was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fifth round, 137th overall in the 2015 NHL draft.

What This Means for the Future

Before the postponement of the NHL season, the Pittsburgh Penguins were in the middle of a playoff race. Sitting in third in the Metropolitan Division, the Penguins held a record of 40-23-6, sitting four points behind the Washington Capitals for first place.

Although the Penguins knew they would not have Simon back, the news still hurts to hear. Even if the season were to resume today, the Penguins would be without Simon for the remainder of the season. Over his brief NHL career, Simon has been a very serviceable player. Capable of playing anywhere in the lineup, he is a high energy player and is gives it his all every shift.

Capable of contributing on the offensive side, Simon does most of his damage in the defensive zone. He is great and killing penalties and intercepts passes with ease. He gets in on the forecheck and pounces on opponents when they make a mistake. All hockey fans wish him a fast recovery and hope to see him back on the ice soon.
