The New York Rangers have re-signed defenceman Anthony DeAngelo to a two-year deal worth $4.8 million AAV.

Anthony DeAngelo Re-signs With Rangers

The Rangers have extended defenceman Anthony DeAngelo after some negotiations took place. He had been rumoured to possibly be traded and went to arbitration for a new contract. Now, he can settle in again and contribute his offensive prowess adding to the Rangers’ success.

In DeAngelo, the Rangers keep an offensive defenceman with a lot of potential. The 24-year-old is a smooth skater that quarterback the power play and make plays. This season, he scored 15 goals and  38 assists for 53 points, adding 47 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers are 48.6 percent Corsi and a Relative Corsi of 3.0.

Those totals are up compared to last season, where he scored four goals, 26 assists for 30 points in 56 games. Over his four-year NHL career DeAngelo has played for the Arizona Coyotes and New York Rangers. In that time, he has 24 goals and 81 assists for 105 career points in 200 career games. The Tampa Bay Lightning originally drafted him in the first round, 19th overall of the 2014 NHL Draft.

What This Means for the Future

The Rangers are glad to retain the young defenceman, as salary cap issues could have forced that a trade be made instead. New York general manager Jeff Gorton was at least able to keep the Sewell, New Jersey native and have him for the future. The Rangers do have talented defencemen like Adam Fox and K’Andre Miller in the system waiting to make a step up. Retaining DeAngelo just makes them stronger on the blueline.

DeAngelo will be happy that he’s staying in New York as he had a breakout season on the offensive end. He’s already almost tripled his goal output this season with the Blueshirts. He just needs to tidy up some of his play at the defensive end.
