NHL Rumours: Future of Boston Bruins Defenceman

It’s time for another round of NHL rumours. We’ve reached the Stanley Cup Final, but there’s plenty of chatter surrounding the other 30 teams. The other teams in the league are trying to figure out how to get to that stage next season. However, there are some tough decisions ahead for general managers. Some clubs might have to give up some key pieces in order to improve their respective rosters. The run up to the NHL Draft and the start of free agency is going to be filled with hot stove talk.

One team that wants to continue their improvement is the Boston Bruins. This edition of NHL rumours deals with a valuable defenceman that could be a trade chip in the offseason.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

NHL Rumours

Boston Bruins Defender Could be Trade Chip This Offseason

Rumour: Former NHLer Nick Kypreos was on Sportsnet last week to discuss the future of Mason Lohrei with the Bruins. Kypreos thinks Boston will try to deal the 25-year-old defenceman at some point in the offseason.

Analysis: This isn’t the first time that Lohrei has been the subject of trade rumours. There was some chatter from Anthony DiMarco back in March that the Bruins were trying to move the American blueliner. However, nothing materialized and the Baton Rouge, La. native finished out the campaign with the Bruins.

Lohrei registered seven goals and 19 assists for 26 points in 73 games last season. He may not put up a lot of points, but the young blueliner has a big frame at 6-foot, 5-inches tall and can play a physical game. However, he was also scratched for multiple Stanley Cup Playoff games by head coach Marco Sturm.

It seems like the Bruins are going to try and find Lohrei a new home in the offseason. His age and potential could make him an interesting trade chip for any team looking to add a young defenceman. Chris Johnston of The Athletic has Loheri listed on his most-recent Big Trade Board.

What It Means

Kypreos said the Bruins are doing their homework in finding a trade partner for the former Ohio State standout. The insider added that the Bruins want to get a piece that will help the club in a different part of the lieneup.

Boston had plenty of trouble getting goals from other parts of the lineup this season. David Pastrnak and Morgan Geekie did plenty of heavy lifting for the Bruins’ offence. However, the team is going to need to add some depth to the rest of the forward group if the Bruins want to the next step in contending.

Michael DeRosa of The Hockey News speculated on possible trade destinations for the defender. The San Jose Sharks seem to be in the mix for plenty of blueliners and Lohrei’s name came up. San Jose also took a massive step and would add some depth to the left side of its defensive group. The Sharks have a plethora of unrestricted free agents and could have a completely different club than what they had in the 2025-26 season.

DeRosa also brought up the Philadelphia Flyers as a possible destination. Lohrei could be the puck-moving defender on the left side that the team needs. The Flyers could also add Lohrei to their power play unit and give that part of the roster some depth.

The Winnipeg Jets were also mentioned as a possible landing spot for Lohrei. Winnipeg could use him as a replacement for Logan Stanley, who was dealt to the Buffalo Sabres at the trade deadline. We could see Lohrei added to the bottom pairing.
