2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs Western Conference Second Round: Ducks vs Golden Knights Preview

The Anaheim Ducks and Vegas Golden Knights meet in the Western Conference Second Round in what projects as one of the most stylistically intriguing matchups of the postseason. Anaheim enters with momentum, confidence, and a high-powered offence that led the first round in scoring. Meanwhile, Vegas arrives with structure, balance, and a roster built specifically for playoff hockey.

However, this matchup differs significantly from Anaheim’s first-round series. Edmonton leaned heavily on star power. Vegas, by contrast, rolls four lines, defends in layers, and rarely beats itself. That contrast will define how this series unfolds.

Series Overview

This series presents a clash between pace and structure.

Anaheim’s identity is clear. They generate offence through speed, transition, and attacking off turnovers. That approach overwhelmed Edmonton at times, particularly when the Ducks were able to stretch the ice and create odd-man rushes. Furthermore, their young core continues to play without hesitation, which has translated into consistent offensive pressure.

Meanwhile, Vegas plays a far more controlled game. The Golden Knights emphasize neutral-zone discipline, defensive layering, and limiting high-danger chances. As a result, they tend to force opponents into extended offensive-zone possessions rather than quick-strike opportunities.

Additionally, experience remains a major differentiator. Vegas has been deep into the playoffs multiple times and understands how to manage momentum swings. Anaheim is still learning in real time, though their first-round performance suggests they are ahead of schedule.

Series Odds, Models, and Predictions

The numbers lean clearly toward Vegas, even if the narrative suggests a closer matchup.

HockeyStats projects the Golden Knights with a 71 percent chance to win the series, while MoneyPuck places Anaheim’s odds to advance at roughly 33 percent. Sportsbooks align closely with those projections, listing Vegas as a −210 favourite compared to Anaheim at +170. Taken together, both model and market imply a roughly two-thirds probability in favour of the Golden Knights.

However, expert sentiment is far more divided. League analysts and observers have framed this as a much tighter series, largely due to Anaheim’s first-round performance and their regular-season success against Vegas .

That gap between perception and projection is where this series becomes interesting. The models favour structure and consistency. The eye test sees speed, confidence, and a team that may not fully understand its ceiling yet.

Ducks vs Golden Knights Season Series Recap

Anaheim swept the regular-season series 3–0, though each game was tightly contested. All three matchups were decided by a single goal, and two required overtime.

While those results provide a confidence boost, they also highlight how narrow the margin is between these teams. The Ducks proved they can compete with Vegas. However, sustaining that level over a full playoff series is a different challenge.

The Ducks’ Keys to Victory

  1. Win Through Speed and Transition: Anaheim’s best path remains pushing pace. If they can generate offence off the rush and force Vegas into a faster game, they can tilt the series.
  2. Sustain Offensive Pressure: The Ducks led the first round in scoring, and they will need that production again. However, Vegas will limit transition chances, so Anaheim must also find ways to create in-zone offence.
  3. Dostál Must Stabilize: Lukáš Dostál delivered timely saves against Edmonton but showed volatility throughout the series. Against a balanced Vegas attack, consistency becomes critical.

The Golden Knights’ Keys to Victory

  1. Control the Neutral Zone: Vegas’ structure is designed to eliminate rush opportunities. If they slow Anaheim’s transition game, they will force the Ducks into less efficient offensive patterns.
  2. Leverage Depth and Balance: Unlike Edmonton, Vegas does not rely on a single line. Contributions throughout the lineup can stretch Anaheim’s defensive coverage over time.
  3. Win the Goaltending Margin: Carter Hart was steady in Round 1 and enters this series with a more stable profile than Dostál. Maintaining that edge could be decisive.

Ducks vs Golden Knights Series Prediction

This series is tighter than the models suggest, but not for the reasons often highlighted.

Vegas holds the advantage in structure, depth, and playoff experience. Those are typically the traits that win in the second round. Furthermore, both market and model projections align strongly in their favour, which is rarely coincidental.

However, Anaheim has already shown it can outperform expectations. Their speed, offensive creativity, and confidence make them uniquely difficult to contain. More importantly, their most likely path to victory lies in a longer, high-variance series where momentum swings and scoring bursts play a larger role.

If the Ducks can continue to generate offence at a high rate and avoid extended defensive-zone breakdowns, they have a real chance to push this series to the limit.

In that environment, anything can happen.

Prediction: Ducks win the series in 7 games.
