Trades and signings have been the order of the day with the trade deadline happening today. However, the Edmonton Oilers have news to announce. Today, the Oilers announced that forward Evander Kane is out for the rest of the regular season. However, he could return for the start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Evander Kane Out for Rest of Regular Season for Edmonton Oilers
Kane has played for the Atlanta Thrashers, Buffalo Sabres, Winnipeg Jets, San Jose Sharks and the Oilers over his 15-year NHL career. The Vancouver native hasn’t played during the 2024-25 season. He last appeared during the Stanley Cup Playoffs where the Oilers lost to the Florida Panthers in seven games.
Last year. Kane notched 24 goals and 20 assists for 44 points in 77 games. Throughout his career, the 33-year-old has 326 goals and 291 assists for 617 points in 930 career games. Atlanta originally drafted Kane in the first round, fourth overall of the 2009 NHL Draft.
Kane underwent knee surgery in January, but also had abdominal surgery in the fall of 2024. He told the media that the knee ailment popped up in January.
What It Means
The Kane injury hurts because he can provide depth to the middle six of a lineup. Kane also can get physical to add to his scoring touch. Edmonton needs forward depth to take the pressure off of Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid.
The Oilers have been scuffling along and there have been times that they have missed Kane in the lineup. There’s hope that he can return for the post-season. Kane’s return to the lineup would be a massive lift to the roster.
A number of Western Conference contenders have made big splashes at the trade deadline in the quest to make the Stanley Cup Final. Edmonton would love to get Kane for the playoffs and add experience to its lineup.
