St. Louis Blues Continue Roster Shakeup

The St. Louis Blues have shaken up their roster in different ways this season. Their latest shakeup sees veteran forward Brandon Saad will be placed on unconditional waivers on Thursday for the purpose of terminating his contract.

Brandon Saad’s Contract to be Terminated

Saad, 32-years old, joined the Blues prior to the 2021-22 season. In his time with the Blues, Saad has been an under-the-radar productive player for the Blue Note. He has truly been an unheralded member of the team.

However, as the Blues retool has continued, it begun to make sense for the Blues to explore trades for Saad. However, the Blues went another direction and placed Saad on waivers on Tuesday. Once he cleared waivers, the next step would have been Saad being assigned to the Springfield Thunderbirds. Saad did clear waivers on Wednesday. However, the two sides have mutually agreed for Saad to be placed on waivers again on Thursday, but this time, Saad’s contract will be terminated and he will become a free agent.

By waiving Saad and subsequently terminating his contract, the Blues free up another roster spot for the abundance of young talent they have available. In addition, the Blues will no longer be responsible for the $4.5 million cap hit on Saad’s contract, which had one more season after this one.

Saad’s Departure is the Latest in Roster Shakeup

Saad’s departure is just latest roster shakeup by general manager Doug Armstrong. In August, Armstrong tendered offer sheets to bring in forward Dylan Holloway and defenceman Philip Broberg. In December, the Blues traded for veteran defenceman Cam Fowler. Just recently, the Blues traded defenceman Scott Perunovich to the New York Islanders in exchange for a draft pick.

Championship Experience Available Soon

If a team acquires Saad either via waivers or free agency, they are getting more than just a consistent 20+ goal scorer. They are getting a two-time Stanley Cup champion. Saad won the Stanley Cup in 2013 and 2015 with the Chicago Blackhawks. Stanley Cup experience is incredibly value. Saad’s championship experience will help the team as they enter the stretch run of the season.
