Valuable Depth Forward Signs New Deal to Return to New Jersey

Stefan Noesen has signed a new contract with the New Jersey Devils. The deal will run for three years and carry an AAV of $2.75 million. After a few resurging years in the NHL, Noesen certainly earned this deal. Moreover, Noesen previously played for the Devils for parts of three seasons between 2016 and 2019.

Stefan Noesen Signed to New Contract

Stefan Noesen is one of these players who fits the mould of work hard and don’t give up. Both in his on-ice game and his career trajectory. Originally a first-round pick of the Ottawa Senators in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, the Plano, Texas native has certainly played the journeyman over his career. Finding NHL ice time with five teams (interestingly not including Ottawa) before coming to the Carolina Hurricanes in 2021, his best statistical season came with the New Jersey Devils in 2017-18 when he put up 27 points in 72 games.

He was never able to match that production again until he came to Carolina. His initial year in the Hurricanes organization saw him mostly play in the AHL, where he excelled. Following that year, the Hurricanes signed him to a new deal with fairly clear intentions to use him in the NHL and not the AHL. And Noesen did not disappoint.

In 2022-23, he put up a new career high in points, tied his career high in goals and hit a new career high in assists (36/13/23). This past season he was almost the same but got one more goal. For most of the season, Noesen was seen as one of the best “bang for your buck” players in the entire league. He has a decent scoring touch but is also not afraid to play physical and get in the dirty areas. In fact, one of his best attributes was his net-front presence and fight on the forecheck.

What This Means for the Devils

At 31 years old, you can’t help but pull for a guy like Stefan Noesen. He has paid his dues and while he may not be a sure bet top-line winger, he can bring great value to a team. With Noesen signed, his hard work continues to pay off. But this is a two-way street and Noesen should provide the team with a player who can contribute on any line when needed. He can contribute on the power play and has no issue playing in a depth scoring role with some added grit still. It should be fun to see another year of Noesen in the NHL.
