The Carolina Hurricanes have announced today that they have named a captain, or rather captains. They have announced veterans Jordan Staal and Justin Faulk as co-captains going into the 2017-18 season.

The Hurricanes have not had a captain since trading Eric Staal to the New York Rangers in February of 2016. While this is a bit of an unorthodox approach, it did not seem to have any ill effect on the organization.
At the press conference to announce their captaincy Staal said, “There’s no question that there are only a select few players that get to play in the NHL and be honored with the ‘C. There’s definitely no better excitement for myself.”
Faulk also commented on being named as a captain saying, “It’s a huge honor for both of us. We’ve been saying for all of last year and even the year before that we have multiple leaders in the room. I don’t know, necessarily, that we are going to go in there and change. That’s the beauty of it with all the guys in the room who can step up and lead. The two of us, we’re going to continue to be ourselves and go about our day the same way.”
Staal, 29, has been with the Hurricanes organization since the 2012-13 season. Since then he has played in 333 games, scoring 67 goals and adding 121 assists. His 333 games for the Hurricanes is good for 24th all-time in franchise history. His 67 goals are 16th all-time, his 121 assists are 11th all-time, and his 188 points are 12th all-time.
Faulk, 25, has spent his entire 401-game career with the Hurricanes organization. He has scored 66 goals and added 126 assists to his career tally since being taken in the second round, 37th overall, in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. His 401 games played are 16th all-time in Hurricanes history, and his goals stand at 17th all-time with his assist total coming in at ninth all-time.
Along with naming Faulk and Staal as co-captains, the Hurricanes announced that Jeff Skinner will be the assistant captain.
