Columbus Blue Jackets forward David Clarkson has failed his pre-season physical. This will result in him missing at least the start of training camp, which begins Thursday. President of Hockey Operations John Davidson made the announcement Wednesday during the club’s Media Day. The 32-year-old will not be with the club during testing and the subsequent pre-season games.

David Clarkson Fails Physical
Even though training camp does not officially open until Thursday, Clarkson opted to complete his physical early. When asked to elaborate on the injury, Davidson said, “Every time he goes to work out and train, it becomes very, very bothersome.” Clarkson will continue to attempt to rehabilitate his back and make his way back on the roster, according to Davidson.
Of most concern to the fans is the cap hit of Clarkson’s contract. Davidson confirmed that the club has insured Clarkson’s contract, should it assign him to the long term injured reserve list. Clarkson has four years remaining on a seven-year, $36.75 million contract signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs prior to the 2013-14 season. The Maple Leafs and Blue Jackets completed a trade in February 2015 which sent injured Jackets forward Nathan Horton to Toronto. Clarkson played in three games following the trade before sustaining a torn oblique muscle and missing the remainder of the season.
The New Jersey Devils originally signed Clarkson as an undrafted free agent in 2005. Clarkson has scored 114 goals and registered 200 points in 570 career NHL games.
In other injury news from Media Day, defenceman Zach Werenski sustained a groin injury at the Traverse City Prospects Tournament last weekend but will not miss any time, Davidson said.
